(CARTERSVILLE, Ga.)—The former drummer and a founding member of the Southern hard rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, Robert Burns Jr., died late Friday in a single-vehicle crash in Georgia, police and his father said.

Burns’ vehicle went off a road just before midnight as it approached a curve near Cartersville, striking a mailbox and a tree, Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Tracey Watson said. Burns, 64, was killed in the wreck. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

The single-vehicle accident remains under investigation, and Watson said further details were not immediately available.

Burns was one of five musicians who founded the band in Jacksonville, Florida. While Burns was with the group, it recorded “Sweet Home Alabama,” ”Gimme Three Steps,” and “Free Bird.” He left the group in 1974.

He continued to play for fun or in guest appearances nationally, said his father, Robert Burns Sr. Early on, the group played in the Burns’ family garage.

“He was a product of his mother, so far as manners is concerned,” the elder Burns said. “He had the manners that would suit the King of England. Very soft-spoken and extremely well-mannered person to come out of that kind of industry.”

Huh? / John Lennon's wife- Cynthia Lennon has died.
« on: April 01, 2015, 1759 UTC »
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-merseyside-32153908

Cynthia Lennon, first wife of The Beatles' John Lennon, has died at her home in Spain, her family has announced.

A message on her son Julian's website said she died "following a short but brave battle with cancer".

It said: "Her son Julian Lennon was at her bedside throughout. The family are thankful for your prayers."

Julian also tweeted a picture of his mother, who was 75, inside a heart with the message "In Loving Memory".

Cynthia met Lennon at art school in Liverpool in 1957 and the couple married just before Beatlemania transformed her husband into one of the most famous men in the world.

At the height of The Beatles' early success she was, at the insistence of the band's management, kept in the background so their legions of female fans were not aware of her existence.

She stayed at home bringing up Julian while the Fab Four toured the world and topped the charts.

The couple divorced in 1968 after Cynthia discovered her husband's affair with Japanese artist Yoko Ono.

In 2009, Cynthia spoke to BBC News about her life with John.
'Refined and reserved'

Former Beatle Ringo Starr tweeted: "Peace and love to Julian Lennon God bless Cynthia love Ringo and Barbara xx".

Hunter Davies, who wrote the only official biography of The Beatles in 1968, described Cynthia as "a lovely woman".

"When I was writing the book I spent two years with them, visiting her home and spending time with her," he said.

"She was totally different from John in that she was quiet, reserved and calm.

"She was not a hippy at all. I think it was the attraction of opposites between them. When they got together at art school everyone was amazed - she was seen as refined and reserved and nobody thought they would last."

He added: "John treated her appallingly. He slept with Yoko in their marital home and, as we discovered later, he also physically attacked her but she was loyal to him."

After divorcing Lennon, she married three more times.

In 1970 she wed Italian hotelier Roberto Bassanini and six years later married engineer John Twist from Lancashire. Both relationships ended divorce.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12529781/chuck-bednarik-philadelphia-eagles-hall-famer-dies-age-89

Chuck Bednarik, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and one of the last great two-way NFL players, died early Saturday, the Philadelphia Eagles said. He was 89.

Bednarik, known as "Concrete Charlie," epitomized the tough-guy linebacker and also was an outstanding center for the Eagles from 1949 to 1962.

He is best remembered for a game-saving tackle at the 9-yard line on the final play of the 1960 title game, and it was typical Bednarik. He threw Green Bay running back Jim Taylor to the ground and refused to let him up while the final seconds ticked off as the Eagles held on for a 17-13 win.

"Everybody reminds me of it and I'm happy they remind me of it," Bednarik once said. "I'm proud and delighted to have played in that game."

He died at an assisted living facility in Richland, Pennsylvania, following a brief illness, the Eagles said in a statement.

Bednarik, who frequently criticized modern athletes, said he played on all but two kickoffs against the Packers and could have kept playing if he needed to, unlike today's players who "suck air after five plays." He missed only three games in his 14-year career.

The tackle on Taylor actually was the second hit that season that drew headlines. Earlier in 1960, he knocked out New York Giants running back Frank Gifford with a blow so hard that Gifford suffered a concussion and didn't play again until 1962.

An iconic photograph captured Bednarik pumping his fist over Gifford's prone body, though the linebacker insisted he wasn't gloating. He said he didn't notice what happened to Gifford after the hit and only saw that he had fumbled and another Eagle recovered the ball.

The Eagles tweeted out a tribute to Bednarik, calling him "Forever an Eagle," with the photo of him towering over Gifford.
