HF Beacons / Re: Anyone copying 8.35 Mhz dasher
« on: September 24, 2010, 0001 UTC »
Dasher coming into MD at 0000z. Weak, but audible.

Update: At 0005z, the signal suddenly came up in strength. Pretty good now, even with the t-storm static.

Hearing the Firedrake on 6925. Weak, S3 or so. Since it is USB and not AM, I assume it is an op having some fun.

HF Beacons / A few beacons this morning
« on: September 23, 2010, 1129 UTC »
Hearing OK, as well as two of the 4096 dashers.  Also on 4102 I'm hearing the wind beacon. All heard on the 635 ft horizontal loop.

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: Khz Spacing! New Observation
« on: September 19, 2010, 1736 UTC »
The spacings are 5 kHz on all the HF bands, with a few stations (mostly small ones) on oddball frequencies.

S7 signal into MD. Much of the music sounded similar to his other recent broadcasts - a bit of Dylan and some other artists. Off at 1529z.

Very cool!  Once we have a radio-quiet morning here, I'll have to try for the beacons again with the new big loop antenna. I tried a few mornings ago, but conditions were pretty poor.

ID at 1303z with Loon call. Variable signal, from about S0 to S7, lots of fading this morning.

I'll second (or third) loop antennas in general. I put up a 132 ft T2FD about 2 years ago, and was quite pleased with the results. Lower signal levels than my various dipoles, but much lower noise levels, so an overall improvement in the SNR.

A few months ago I put up a roughly 635 ft horizontal loop antenna, which is about 20 to 40 ft above the ground, in a roughly rectangular shape. The goal was to have something with better MW reception than the T2FD. So far, it seems to be working well for that, also for HF.  I am anxious to try it on LW this winter.

Weak S1 signal into MD, but low noise levels so not too bad. Not one that I usually pick up here, so it was a nice catch.

Yes, hearing KIPM now at 2038z. S6/S7 signal into MD.

We had an M1 flare yesterday afternoon that killed HF below 10 MHz. WWV and CHU were gone.
