SDR - Software Defined Radio / The new improved openwebrx
« on: April 30, 2020, 2132 UTC »
This deserves its own topic :-)

Regardless of how one views the definition of "OPEN SOURCE"  we're lucky to have this software re-supported by Jakon (DD5JFK).

I'm using it on a couple of RTL SDR dongles and I really like it. Being  a Kiwi SDR owner and fan, the UI is comfortable and doesnt require advanced degrees to operate.  This is really nice software and the new version has a bunch of digital mode decoders built in. I've also hooked up a SDRplay SDR and there's support/installers for others.

There's a Groups.io group to support this and installers are available.    I'm using it with the Soapy connector to enable a pretty decent HF receiver too!

Two thumbs up!

HF Beacons / KPH and the desert beacons
« on: March 08, 2020, 2224 UTC »
KPH is a wonderful resource (albeit it's cheating :-) )  for desert beacon listening.

The 4096 pair is visible here as is Windy up just below 4103.

I can't figure out how to paste images here any longer, but head to

Not sure what they are officially called nor the exact freq since I am on the Degen 1103.

4097ish @ 645 PM PDT....W beacon...pips in between the W.

4096 @ 655 PM PDT.... single dasher about 4 sec interval.

Pretty amazing on telescopic whip.

Can some of you western swls id for me?

Fun to listen to what I hear about so often on this board.

I've been meaning to experiment with the Arduino I've had around for years. A couple of hours of dinking around and downloading libs and I've got a functional programmable keyer that I can set into "low power mode" (uA?) . Nice! The keying string is almost infinite in length if needed and given that it's programmable, it can be buried in loops in loops in loops giveing a variety of messages, etc. Cool!

Oh, the best part? Buying from banggood.com or similar outfits, the mini versions of the arduino are less than three dollars DELIVERED in the US.  Yes, I'll have to hang a single transistor on the output to key a transmitter but that's not any sort of problem.
