0124z Some versions of Hotel California, Stairway to Heaven
0130z To Love Somebody
0138z Flute music -- corresponds with what myteaquinn logged, version of Du Hast by Algal. Probably same for other versions of songs I heard, familiar, yet ... not.

Barely audible through static crashes.

General Radio Discussion / Re: Logbooks
« on: September 18, 2023, 0350 UTC »
Back around 1998 I used Clarion database software on an old PC to create a shareware logging utility based on the ARRL log book format. I made it as easy as possible to just tick a box and keep manual entries to a minimum, other than whatever notes the user wanted to add.

And soon afterward Clarion was discontinued. The  data logging shareware was standalone and didn't need a copy of Clarion to run. It also created standard data to transfer to any other database.

But I lost interest in trying to keep up with changes in tech.

Nowadays I mostly just listen. Due to heavy and worsening RFI blotting out the sky (it even breaks through FM stations here and completely wipes out most AM MW stations), I don't listen indoors anymore. It's almost impossible. If I want to stay indoors occasionally I'll try a remote SDR.

So I'll tote a portable out to the backyard. If I get at least 50 yards away from the nearest building it's tolerable. But I'm not gonna lug a laptop and WiFi booster. Occasionally I'll jot down a few notes on my phone for new-to-me stations or unique programs. Then I'll copy the logs to the HFU later. That's about it for the past few years.

I suppose I could create an Android app comparable to my old Clarion database for MSDOS and Win95. It would be easier than using the simple notepad with no formatting or boxes to tick to speed up logging.

Backyard with Sony ICF-2010 and mosquitos, taking notes on phone.

0145 UTC -- switched to indoor SDR to escape skeeters
Booming mile-wide signal, great audio, punching through heavy noise. Didn't realize until I got inside the carrier I heard on 6875 was Mix transmitting IDs in waterfall. Heard about this before, but first time I've seen it.

SINPO -- 54344, fighting through heavy noise, some interference and fading. Very good on outdoor portable with just the whip, excellent via SDR

0308 UTC -- still booming in, same signal strength, less interference, noise and fading, SINPO 55444

0345 UTC -- Guitar just barely audible via portable in the backyard.
0405 UTC -- Better via online SDR, thin audio, lots of static crashes, sounds like audio from movie or TV show with eerie background music
0407 UTC -- Oops, I just needed to reset filter bandwidth to get fuller audio. Some of the background music familiar, something I have in my own collection, reminiscent of The Moscow Coup Attempt project by Derek Whitacre.
0420 UTC -- SSTV, good signal but I still haven't installed MMSSTV on my laptop
0422 UTC -- Chanting, eerie music. Seems familiar, can't quite place it.
0430 UTC -- Yup, Moscow Coup Attempt, Failure of Shortwave Radio 2. Love Derek's stuff. I don't know why he's not already one of the hottest movie music guys, but his stuff is fire.
0441 UTC – More Moscow Coup Attempt, signal improving to Maryland SDR. Vultures, Do You Fear Sleep. The latter is one of the all time great moody songs.
0500 UTC – OTHR but music from TMCA still hanging in there
0508 UTC -- Shout out from op, thanky kindly, enjoyed the show

That's interesting enough to motivate me to lug my portable gear out to a remote location to minimize RFI. For months it's almost impossible to copy anything from my home unless it's blasting an AM MW level signal.
