Between the vaguely worded story and hilariously ill-informed reader comments, I'm wondering whether this was an early April Fools Day prank (first posted 3/26/10).

Gotta laugh at the concepts some folks have about how radio signals work - as if there's a finite amount, like water from a garden hose, and if too many people are using the latest magical overunity doodad, it'll reduce the signal to other WiFi users. Yup. That explains why KRLD on 1080 kHz doesn't come in clearly to my radio some days - too damned many other listeners are tuned in and hogging the signal.

North American Shortwave Pirate / 6925 USB WLDJ (Northwoods?)

Not sure if Northwoods Radio started and stopped or transitioned into WLDJ show, both similar signal and audio here.

4/2/10
6925 USB
0133z: Started with loon calls and several Northwoods Radio ID's with "Broadcasting freedom from the Great Lakes" motto.
0139z: WLDJ, Voice of the Last DJ ID. Tom Petty "Last DJ", Traffic "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys", other music.
0200z: WLDJ ID, something about Stephen Hawkings?
0205z: SSTV, poor copy here, orange background

SINPO - 34333 between 0133-0150z, sudden drop after 0150z and more local RFI noise.

1308-1336z: Just barely audible, laugh track with some audio around 1308z, Bill Withers "Lean On Me" around 1329z.  No copy of 1335z SSTV.
1336z: Radio Ga-Ga ID.

In the UTILITY section "LEX" of Ft. worth, Texas reports V24
observations complete with audio sample.

Don't trust that guy.  He drunk-DX's and logs in the wrong sections.

Yup, I've caught V24 a few times, but logged to the Utility rather than Spy Numbers logging section.  Why?  I dunno, I've slept since then.  Ask Mickey.  ???

Spy Numbers / Re: 6840 USB , EE YL phonetics

Probably E10, based on time and frequency.  That YL plays hard to get here in Texas - I don't hear from her nearly often enough.

North American Shortwave Pirate / Re: Magnetar Radio 6930u
« on: March 27, 2010, 0639 UTC »
Same heard here on 6930 USB since around 0012z. ID's sound like "Radio Mathesar" (character from Galaxy Quest) or "Radio Magnetar", can't tell for sure.
0031z: ID again, still can't quite copy it clearly enough here to tell whether it's "Mathesar", "Magnetar" or something else.
0039z: Okay, definitely heard the "t" sound on that ID, sounds like "Radio Magnetar"

More spacey-electro-Devo-ish music.

0045z: Clear "Radio Magnetar" ID, more spacey stuff, Hal 9000 audio bits from "2001"
0111z: Radio Magnetar sign-off ID.

Cool show, thanks!

SINPO - 24332 until 0040z, 34322 after 0040z, stronger peaks but deeper fades.  Fairly persistent heterodyne, maybe local RFI.

« on: March 27, 2010, 0615 UTC »
Never caught positive ID for Wolverine but this corresponds with other logs on 6950 USB, 3/27/10:
6950 USB
Since 0115z, "I Only Have Eyes For You", "Put Your Head On My Shoulder"
0126z: Police "Wrapped Around Your Finger"
0137z: Tears for Fears "Head Over Heels"
0150z: Heard some Ray Charles, some Go-Go's, Yes, other stuff.

Still haven't copied a Wolverine Radio ID clearly due to heavy intermittent RFI here. Not sure if this is a theme show, other than luuuvvvv. Nothing wrong with that.

SINPO - 33222, good signal peaks, lots of fading, heavy intermittent local RFI here tonight.

Never caught positive ID, but this corresponded with other logs for 6925 AM, 3/27/10.
0158z: Occasional hints of audio on 6925 AM, presumably WHYP but no positive ID here.
0230z: Went outside w/ portable to escape household RFI, able to copy Kracker and Sycko talking, something about the fire department, mention of Uncle Bob and heard Uncle Bob join in. Only briefly audible between fades.

This is why you can believe only half of what you see.  Only the cones can be trusted.  The rods are unreliable.

Perhaps Prime Minister Zenawi simply needs to coordinate messages with the VOA and decide whether they're at war with Eurasia or Eastasia this week.

General Radio Discussion / Re: Passport web site shutting down
« on: March 22, 2010, 0601 UTC »
The Internet Archive Wayback Machine has recorded snapshots of the Passport site as it appeared from 1999-2008.  Hopefully 2009-2010 will eventually appear, but there's often a lag time of several months.
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.passband.com/

Occasionally there are gaps in site history on the Wayback Machine, including attachments that don't always get picked up - images, PDF files, etc. - but overall it's a useful resource.
