HF Beacons / 4110 Whooper-Type Signal At 1035z
« on: January 22, 2022, 1039 UTC »
At 1035z on 22 Jan 2022 on 4110 I am hearing a signal similar to the Desert Whooper's "whoop", but with no CW characters.  It is about one second long, with a one second pause between transmissions.

A pirate beacon or a utility signal of some kind?

Zeak, good catch hearing both the H and F beacons at the same time on 4100.  So it appears that the newer F beacon is not the reconfigured H beacon.

Related trivia:  in the late afternoons or early evenings I get on 80m SSB to talk to a ham friend in San Bernardino, about 150 miles from my Santa Barbara location.  I've noticed that if I can't hear the Desert Whooper beacon, I am more likely also not to he able to hear my friend.  So DW acts as a useful propagation beacon for me.

Here in Santa Barbara I am hearing the F beacon at 0913 UTC, but could not hear it an hour ago.  No copy on the Desert Whooper tonight.

I can also hear the F beacon on the KFS SDRs--it is strongest on the Southeast SDR, and a little weaker on the omni SDR.

HF Beacons / 4100 Letter "F" Beacon
« on: January 20, 2022, 0742 UTC »
At 0730 UTC on 20 Jan 2022 on 4100.0 I am hearing a F beacon in Santa Barbara. Wonder if it is from the same site as the H beacon, which I have not heard in several weeks?

I hear it weakly in Santa Barbara at 0730 UTC.

Radio Pushka, do you have SSB?. It travels further, although with less fidelty.

Tonight I am hearing the H beacon very weakly in DM04 at a slightly lower frequency.  I used to copy it at 4100.2, but at 0840z I am hearing it slightly lower at 4099.8.  My Icom 7200 is quite stable in the CW mode, and it appears the H beacon has drifted downward slightly.

Weak AM carrier at 0818 in Santa Barbara.  On the Mojave SDR on 6925 am hearing weak AM signal with rock music.

Tonight at 0850 I can hear the "H" beacon directly here in Santa Barbara.  I can't hear Windy or the Desert Whooper.

10/11 meters / Re: 11 meter beacons

In the early 1990s I used to hear extremely slow and chirpy CW beacons around 27500 when 10/11 was open to Asia.  I posted the question on a radio forum, and someone suggested they might be drift fishing net beacons.

HF Beacons / Re: Windy 4102.85 malfunction?
« on: August 31, 2021, 0709 UTC »
I am listening to Windy at 07:00 UTC, and I believe the anemometer/wind speed gauge is malfunctioning.  When it gives the usual "W" character there is an about 12 second-long dash, instead of the usual "dit" or "dits".  (Or is this normal when there is no wind?)

Voltage is 11.7v and temperature is 84 degrees.

07:20 UTC update--the dits have returned after the W character.

HF Beacons / Windy - Letter "S" CW Beacon 4103 0830 utc 21 Dec 2020
« on: December 21, 2020, 0849 UTC »
I tried listening for the Windy beacon tonight, but could not hear it on 4103.  Instead I am hearing the letter "S" sent about every two minutes. Speed is about 12wpm.

FWIW, while I normally hear the Desert Whooper beacon in the early evening, I can't hear it tonight at midnight, although it has a good signal now on the KFS omni antenna.

My location is Santa Barbara, Calif., and I am listening on a 50' long wire antenna with an Icom 7200.

Spy Numbers / 6990 LSB 0845 UTC 3 Feb 2019 --Asian Numbers?
« on: February 03, 2019, 0852 UTC »
While listening on the Calif. KPH SDR, I'm hearing a robotic male voice reciting short Japanese-sounding words--very repetitive.  Off at 0850, but with weaker-signal "live" Asian language voices.

Any idea of what I'm hearing?
