I'll always remember the "check your tire pressure" messages from the early 2000s on FRN thanks to Al.

His legend lives on.

MP

He was *so* sad that Obama stole his tire pressure thunder. I think he was comforted to know that he was preaching the gospel long before others understood the precious importance of TIRE PRESSURE!

/here's to a tire pressure gauge in every pot

I appreciate that, Corq, but weren't goats Al's spirit animal?

I was merely a replacement for his childhood hero, Arnold Ziffle.

Fun fact, Fanny's brother is a hobby goat farmer, I'm not sure if he ever posted pix here, but his brother's hobby farm was the source of most of Fanny's goat pictures...I hope...

I am so sorry to hear this. My thoughts are with Corq and all the families. It's great to put a face to the name that I recognize all the way back to my early days in the FRN. So many funny and weird times. Al and I would sometimes chat about different topics on IRC. The one that I remember was that he was an ex brother-in-law of Gary Richrath, the lead guitarist of REO Speedwagon. Since they were one of my favorite bands back in the day, I had lots of questions.
Thanks for sharing the picture Corq.

Pigmeat - great to see you back too. I remember logging one of the last RPI shows during the waning days of the FRN. Lots of good memories.

Z

PS: Zane, The REO Speedwagon reference was in fact, true.

Thank you Zane, I know Fanny appreciated your reports.

I know it sounds silly, but Fanny's pirate radio personality was his "other life", but a place where he found solace, friendship, fun, and inspiration. I'm glad to have heard from you all. It takes the edge off, it really does.

Peace be with you all.

Top for Fansome fans. You know who you are. I'm talkin' to you Belinda.

It's true. I don't know what she'll do without him now!

PS: Belinda, I have his poster of you, if you'd choose to sign it, I'm sure it would make him smile even in heaven.

Fansome lives on in those who believe ;-)

Pigmeat was Fansome's spirit animal.

I am thankful for Pigmeat's return.

Long live Pigmeat.

Long Live Al Fansome.

Thank you to everyone here <3

Fansome enjoyed the hobby to almost the exclusion of all other hobbies. When he worked late nights in Pennsylvania in the 90's and early 2000's, he'd listen for pirates from his test-bed "trailer" in Harrisburg. We became friends on IRC when I needed a quick resource on desert beacons while visiting Vegas for Defcon (spoilers: I never found any) but he had follow up security questions about a project he was working on, and we sort of grew fond of each other from there, finally meeting person at a DC-area meetup the year after.

He was painfully shy in person, but we hit it off, and he moved down a year later to join my household and rogue band of cats. As I understood it, prior to us meeting, he'd worked many long hours in the toll system projects, listening to the bands all night long (hence those weird, exhausted missives at 4am...). You guys helped him get through some very tough times through the early years before we'd met.

I hope it will provide comfort to you guys to know he had the radio at his bedside, enjoying his last few months with what he loved most. You are a wonderful community, and I'm so glad you were for here for us. <3

PS: And yes, I called him "Fanny" around the house, much to his chagrin...

Kevin Miller, KM6AU, passed away May 5th 2022, from cardiac complications following a stroke. He is survived by 4 brothers and 2 sisters, and his longtime domestic partner, Lori Easterly.

He enjoyed the more esoteric radio hobbies, including “DXing” shortwave pirates, beginning his love of radio as a Caltech student making CB contacts via 70’s-era Tandy walkie-talkies. He never tired of hearing "weirdness" on the bands.

Kevin graduated from Caltech with a BS in Engineering in 1979. From home automation systems in the early 1980’s, to Industrial Control Systems and highway toll system infrastructure, he enjoyed a long engineering career, retiring in 2009 to move to Florida. Kevin was keenly curious to learn about this fabled “Florida man,” and inquire if he could apply for membership to this elite and fearless group.

He loved a variety of cats, big and small. He enjoyed the many friends and contacts he made at Winterfest, the radio forums, IRC WUNCLUB, and HF Underground Discord chats.

To his internet forum friends, he was simply the mischievous  “Al Fansome,” and he will be dearly missed.

Update, GOAL MET!

https://fundrazr.com/radiowaves?ref=ab_6B5fU6_ab_6B5n05

Thank you to all who contributed, spread the word, or reported reception to the project. Shortwave is kind of a lesser-known hobby in the digital age, but this proves our hobby and knowledge can have real impact.

An excerpt of the announcement per the project sponsor:

Quote
"You did it! We have reached our funding goal thanks to many modest and a few very generous contributions. We will keep it going as we add transmission facilities, times and languages until we're no longer needed or we exhaust funding...

...Also, VOA itself mentions our project in an article about digital circumvention tools being used after Russia invaded Ukraine: https://www.voanews.com/a/vpn-use-spikes-as-russians-seek-out-facts-on-ukraine-war/6482178.html"
This is project to rebroadcast/relay Radio Free Europe to censorship-impacted areas in Eastern Europe:

Quote
With Moscow silencing foreign media in Russia, threatening to send reporters to jail and censoring all war information, objective outside information is critically needed not only for Russia, but also for Ukraine and surrounding countries.

Such content, produced by the U.S. government-funded Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is being disseminated on the internet and on TV. But these Russian, Ukrainian and English language programs are not being distributed through the simplest technology that skirts censorship and internet shutdowns  -- shortwave radio.

The parent agency of VOA and RFE/RL, the U.S. Agency for Global Media, has decided not to air such transmissions (unlike the BBC). As these programs are in the public domain, we plan to air them live and on tape delay by purchasing air time on commercial shortwave stations in the United States and Europe. These powerful transmitters (with hundreds of thousands of watts and large antenna systems) can easily reach Russia, Ukraine and the rest of Eastern Europe where millions and millions of people still have shortwave radios. These potential listeners   will be alerted through social media as to what frequencies and times to listen for these critical programs.

At this stage, organizers have started a fundraiser to buy airtime to get the content closer to Ukraine and Russia and affected regions, in response to Moscow's censorship and crackdown on dissenting opposition views and media organizations.

However, for other interested parties who have means to re-broadcast to the region, I am assured "All VOA and RFE audio/video streams are considered in the public domain" and that radio enthusiasts with means to disseminate RFE broadcasts near Russia / Belarus and affected regions would be encouraged to participate. 8)

For those interested in donating, more information is available here: https://fundrazr.com/61xi2e?ref=ab_6B5fU6_ab_5dr1kVXCscG5dr1kVXCscG

More information regarding this project is expected to be announced Monday, March 7th.

Thank you all!

As of today, $4,280 raised - Thank you to all who have participated so far! Here's an update on where the transmissions are being heard, as of 10 hours ago:

Quote
Thanks to WRMI, our one-hour test transmission in Russian (from Radio Svoboda -- Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty) is on the air right now on 7780 kHz. (A clip below of the first minute or so with the station ID in English followed by the Russian programming as heard on the U.S. East Coast).

We are already getting solid reception reports from as far away as Poland so presumably it also being received in Russia, as well as the surrounding countries where Russian is widely understood.

We hope to start the daily transmissions in Russian soon, in addition to the VOA English program dedicated to Ukraine news which we began airing Monday.

Thank you again everyone for your contributions. Without you this would not be happening tonight!

There's a running blog for transmission updates if you'd like to follow along:
