We seek to understand and document all radio transmissions, legal and otherwise, as part of the radio listening hobby. We do not encourage any radio operations contrary to regulations.

Thanks for taking the time to point out the mistake. For anyone who wants check it, the exact wording is:
Canada was a hotbed of shortwave pirate activity in the '80s and '90s, but Radio True North and the Northern Relay Service are two of the only stations over the past five years to announce a location North of the border. In fact, it sometimes calls itself "Canadian Radio after Dark."
Something is missing here. I'm not sure if I accidentally deleted it, never typed it, or if something got moved without everything being fixed. The intention was to point out two other stations announcing a Canadian location & say that this new station steps it up a notch by sometimes calling itself "Canadian Radio after Dark."

Just an update that the weekend has started. Congratulations to Captain Morgan for being reported in New Zealand last night!
I've also heard from listeners in India who have asked for more scheduled broadcasts. If any stations want to try for India (and to reach others), you could either post test schedules in the Broadcast Announcements page on HFU or e-mail the schedule to me and I'll post it on the weekend test page on my blog with no station name.

Tuned in to a Billy Joel song, then a Steve Mann editorial from Radio Eclipse and Louis Armstrong "What a Wonderful World." If I remember correctly, Voice of the Long Run was a Radio Eclipse parody about 20 years ago. Nice signal

Just a reminder that the next Global HF Weekend is coming up: March 30-April 2, 2017
Finnish DXer Harri Kujala started the weekends (the 1st weekend of April & the 1st weekend of November) about five years ago & I said I'd write about them. The idea was for listeners in faraway areas to be able to hear broadcasts that normally would not be audible (or barely so)--all while promoting cooperation among those in the hobby. In those first GFWs, some transatlantic QSOs were established and stations from Europe & North America were reported in Russia, India, Ukraine, Japan, and other countries.
I'd expect that some stations will post schedules on HFU. I'll also be tracking the broadcasts and schedules on my blog, so if any stations send schedules to me, I'll post it, but without the station name: just date, time, frequency. This will be especially handy for those stations who choose to operate outside of Harri's suggested 19m and 13m frequencies. Given the lack of sunspots and the low solar activity, 9, 11, 13, and 15 MHz might be better choices than 21 MHz.
Here's the rest of the general info:

General frequency ranges:
15010-15100 kHz
21455-21550 kHz
Basic schedule:
European morning, 0800-1200 UTC from Europe to Asia/Japan/Oceania.
European afternoon, 1200-1600 UTC from Europe to North America and vice versa.
European night, 2200-2400 UTC from North America to Asia/Oceania.
Of course, these are general frequency ranges where pirates have broadcast during prior Global HF Pirate weekends. Some stations will surely operate on frequencies and times outside of these ranges. These will be updated on HF Underground (https://www.hfunderground.com/) and on the Hobby Broadcasting (http://hobbybroadcasting.blogspot.com/) blog as it happens.

I was tuning around, looking for SWBC stations above 75m and found this station playing movie audio from "The Hunt for Red October" & possibly some other stuff. Strong signal; surprised to run into a pirate here.

Wow, really sorry to hear this. I only met him briefly at a hamfest about 20 years ago, but I talked to him on the phone a few times & was in contact a lot in the late '80s & early '90s. I e-mailed him in the past year & he said "How many years has it been for us? Gads, I'll be 80 on my next birthday!! Where has the time gone?"
And his last words to me were "Remember, broadcast laws are for dogs!"

Pretty good signal here, but some local noise is making clear reception a bit difficult. "I saw him raise his right hand and make a stabbing motion." I couldn't quite copy enough info to figure out which show this was. Hopefully, the local noise will disappear soon & give me a chance to hear it better later.

Newport Pirate Radio, 87.9 with DJ Dig-It and special guest, DJ Archie (although I only heard one person on the air). Announcer sometimes talking slowly over and in with instrumental music (as I've heard at times on FM pirates and college stations). Variety of jazz, funk, & disco + a few other things. Louis Armstrong "Jeepers Creepers," Jim Croce "Operator," Village People "In the Navy," Nena "99 Red Balloons" (German version), etc. Some periods of dead air, but sounds more like audio-to-transmitter going out because DJ doesn't mention tech problems. Nice surprise!
