6255   KOREA REP. Echo of Hope - Suwon-Osan. At 1140 with Korean discussion program, female speaker doing all the talking, and male speaker responding with hmm..hmmm (reminds me of home!). A series of canned anncts at 1148. Lovely signal with no jamming and // 4885 also heard, Aug 23.

9100   KOREA REP. Echo of Hope - Suwon-Osan. Noted at 1151 with Korean discussion but not as strong as the parallel 4885 and 6255 kHz. Aug 23.

Propagation / VOACAP SHORTWAVE PREDICTION TOOLS
« on: September 29, 2018, 1043 UTC »
Heres a little review that may be of interest to a few here in this group.

VOACAP is a professional online high-frequency shortwave propagation prediction application. And it's one of the most useful do-it-yourself tools for amateur radio operators, DXers and shortwave listeners.

Recently, there have been some layout changes to both the HFBC and amateur radio models of the app. This review covers the benefits of this app and looks at the new layout.

Equipment / RETRO RECEIVER REVIEW #12 -The YAESU FRG-100
« on: May 12, 2018, 2223 UTC »
Like the cat that has nine lives, the Yaesu FRG-100 is one receiver that just hung on year after year. Yaesu just couldnt kill it! Here's a review I've just completed of a receiver that I have owned for nearly 20 years, and it's one I love taking on DXpeditions.

Shortwave Broadcast / Ozy Radio Returns...again!
« on: May 09, 2018, 0633 UTC »
My thanks to Ron Howard (CA, USA) for the heads up on this one. A message to Ron from Craig Allen (owner) at Ozy Radio advises that the broadcaster is now back on the air with 1 kW on 4835 kHz. The signal here at 0600 UTC today (May 9) was weak into Mount Evelyn. But it's only 4pm local, so should be much stronger here by 7pm.

The station has been missing from 4835 since around the end of March. Prior to that, it was on 5045 kHz.

Clandestine Stations / R. Free North Korea
« on: April 25, 2018, 0217 UTC »
15630   UZBEKISTAN. R. Free North Korea - Tashkent. Long Korean talks at 1250 to s/off 1300 after ID and closing anncts. A grumbly jamming sound noted in the background but generally a poor signal on Apr 22.

Clandestine Stations / VoTibet - 11517, 11507 and 11603
« on: April 25, 2018, 0217 UTC »
11517   TAJIKISTAN. Voice of Tibet - Dushanbe. Long talks in Mandarin at 1203. Sudden change to 11507 kHz at exactly 1207. A few seconds of music on the new frequency then a continuation of the talk. Fair signal on both frequencies and no jamming noted either here or on the Shenzhen SDR..so I dont know why they bother with the change! Apr 24.

11603   TAJIKISTAN. Voice of Tibet - Dushanbe. Tibetan service at 1250 with talk and occasionally interrupted by chanting and drums. Pop song at 1255.

Clandestine Stations / Moo Zoo!!
« on: April 25, 2018, 0215 UTC »
The station with the funny name....... Well .... funny to me!

7530   TAIWAN. Suab Xaa Moo Zoo - Tanshui. S/on 2230 in a Hmong dialect to SEAs. Sounded like a current affairs program with occasional stabs of music between items. A weak signal and eventually faded by 2245, Apr 23.

Clandestine Stations / Shiokaze Sea Breeze - 6040
« on: April 25, 2018, 0213 UTC »
6040   JAPAN. Shiokaze Sea Breeze - Yamata. S/on 1300 with ID in Japanese on Tues, beamed to Korea. Fair signal, Apr 24.

Shortwave Broadcast / Bhutan Broadcasting Service
« on: April 25, 2018, 0212 UTC »
6035   BHUTAN. Bhutan BS - Thimphu. Weak signal under the co-channel PBS Yunnan when first tuned in at 1100, but became stronger than Yunnan by 1135 with English programming, consisting of chat and a phone-in quiz. Phrases such as Are you ready for the next question.? would pop up out of the noise. 1141 - female ballad. Sudden s/off at 1145, leaving a weakened Yunnan signal in the clear. Always a difficult one to hear so a pleasing result tonight, Apr 24.
