« on: February 25, 2017, 1015 UTC »
5985   MYANMAR. Myanmar Radio - Phin Oo Lwin. At 1603 with a Burmese music program of light pops and only occasional softly spoken Burmese anncts. Rechecked the frequency at 1650 and still found it musicing away but with somewhat more traditional instrumental numbers. Heavy QRM from co-channel CRI-Beijing's Swahili service to EAf, but in the clear for three minutes between 1657 and 1700 when there's a break in the CRI transmissions. Shortwave Broadcast / 5004 kHz - R. Madagasikara - Horrible Audio
« on: February 25, 2017, 1014 UTC »
5004.16v (approx!)  MADAGASCAR. R. Madagasikara - Ambohidrano. First noted at 1755 with horrible audio. Talks and boppy music. Suddenly switched to a tuning tone at 1758 for around 20 seconds (there's nothing like a good tune-up in the middle of programming!!). Several short breaks in transmission, between 1759 and 1804. Terribly wobbly carrier heard when listened in SSB mode, indicating a malleable approach to channel allocation. Some hum on the audio (probably transmitter fault rather than a studio audio issue). Several more short breaks in audio at 1820. Well down from it's usual 5008-5011 frequency range. Don't mistake this as the highly irregular and only occasionally heard R. Bata! Feb 24.

Shortwave Broadcast / Radio Afghanistan - Finally after many years!
« on: February 14, 2017, 0928 UTC »
6100   AFGHANISTAN. R. Afghanistan - Kabul. Long talk in what sounded like Dari (on this occasion….and NOT Urdu as mentioned in some lists) at 1605, clear channel (no KCBS heard), electronic Afghani song with a strong rap feel at 1610. Two clear IDs at 1615 and some mentions of Taliban in a talk that followed. Afghani pop ballad at 1624. Into the Arabic service at 1630. Fair to poor signal on Feb 12. It's been many years since I last heard this station, and decades since I last QSL'd them. They took forever to reply....one QSL came after nearly 12 months waiting.
