Clandestine Stations / Two Dandal Kura Outlets
« on: March 11, 2017, 2141 UTC »
7415   ASCENSION IS. Dandal Kura R. - Ascension. A weak signal drifting in through the noise at 0635, in the Kanuri language with talks. ID at 0638 as Dandal Kura Radio International. Groovy electroacoustic female vocal at 0640. Often difficult to hear at Mount Evelyn at this time of year. Mar 10.

15480   ENGLAND. Dandal Kura R. - Woofferton. Moves here at 0700 after the 7415 kHz outlet closes at the same time. ID and phoned-in news report. Weak signal and difficult listening due to the co-channel presence of CNR 1. However, I suspect Dandal Kura will be easily heard in Europe at this time. Mar 10.

Clandestine Stations / Manara Radio
« on: March 10, 2017, 0736 UTC »
I haven't heard Manara Radio for a long time now. Does anyone know what's going on with this station. Latest check today on 15440 at 0730 both at Mount Evelyn and via an Italian SDR remote - nothing. Has it bit the dust?

Thanks, Rob VK3BVW

11508   TAJIKISTAN. Voice of Tibet - Dushanbe. Tibetan service at 1248. Strong signal and only very light jamming noted on this evening. Hi-pitched het from 11505 CNR 1 jammer, easily resolved with the receiver's notch filter and listening in USB. Also,

9508   TAJIKISTAN. Voice of Tibet - Dushanbe. Noted at 1355 till s/off 1400. Scheduled for the Tibetan service at 1330-1400.

Shortwave Broadcast / 5985 - Myanmar Radio
« on: February 25, 2017, 1015 UTC »
5985   MYANMAR. Myanmar Radio - Phin Oo Lwin. At 1603 with a Burmese music program of light pops and only occasional softly spoken Burmese anncts. Rechecked the frequency at 1650 and still found it musicing away but with somewhat more traditional instrumental numbers. Heavy QRM from co-channel CRI-Beijing's Swahili service to EAf, but in the clear for three minutes between 1657 and 1700 when there's a break in the CRI transmissions. ID at 1658 then s/off at 1700 after national anthem. Feb 24.

Shortwave Broadcast / 5004 kHz - R. Madagasikara - Horrible Audio
« on: February 25, 2017, 1014 UTC »
5004.16v (approx!)  MADAGASCAR. R. Madagasikara - Ambohidrano. First noted at 1755 with horrible audio. Talks and boppy music. Suddenly switched to a tuning tone at 1758 for around 20 seconds (there's nothing like a good tune-up in the middle of programming!!). Several short breaks in transmission, between 1759 and 1804. Terribly wobbly carrier heard when listened in SSB mode, indicating a malleable approach to channel allocation. Some hum on the audio (probably transmitter fault rather than a studio audio issue). Several more short breaks in audio at 1820. Well down from it's usual 5008-5011 frequency range. Don't mistake this as the highly irregular and only occasionally heard R. Bata! Feb 24.

6110   ETHIOPIA. R. Fana - Addis Ababa. Just caught the ID and WWW address in either Oromo or Amharic at 1617 before a 2-minute spell of "dead air". Then news reports at 1620. Another 1-min interruption, then the program returned at 1624. Good signal with slight co-channel QRM PBS Xizang. Feb 24.
