Shortwave Broadcast / Radio Sama - 15260
« on: April 25, 2018, 0211 UTC »
15260   AUSTRIA. R. Sama (IBRA Media) - Moosbrunn. S/on 0800 in Arabic to ME. A very weak signal on Apr 23.

Shortwave Broadcast / Gaweylon Tibetan Radio
« on: April 25, 2018, 0211 UTC »
15215.1   UAE. Gaweylon Tibetan R. - Dhabayya. This FEBC sponsored program noted at 1215 in Tibetan with a weak signal and lots of talk. ID and an address in India was given at 1226, then the distorted FEBC “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” interval signal, and finally off at 1229. An odd frequency - registered with HFCC as 15215, so surely Dhabayya can get a little closer to that! Apr 24.

Shortwave Broadcast / VoKorea - 13760
« on: April 25, 2018, 0210 UTC »
13760   D.P.R.KOREA. VoK - Kujang. Rather late signing on at 0734 for the 0730 service. Part way through the anthem by the time they “arc-ed it up”. Russian to Eu at a weak signal level at first but improved by 0750. // 15245 but not as strong there, Apr 23.

Shortwave Broadcast / R. Akhbar Mufriha
« on: April 25, 2018, 0208 UTC »
9530   ASCENSION IS. R. Akhbar Mufriha (HCJB) - Ascension Is. S/on 2145 with ID and what sounded like a radio play (!). Beams to WAf and heard with a weak signal here until f/out at 2200. Depending on which reference you look at, the language of this broadcast is either Pulaar or Hassinya. Pulaar is a Fula language spoken by people in Senegal, Mauritania, the Gambia, and western Mali. Hassinya is an Arabic language from the Maghrebi group (there are many regional varieties of Arabic!) and is spoken in Mauritania, Mali, Algeria, Libya, Senegal, Morocco and neighbouring countries. What I was listening to SOUNDED more like a derivative of Arabic to my ears…..but really I just don’t know. I remain defeated in this language identification!. Apr 23.

ALSO

7300   ENGLAND. R. Akhbar Mufriha (HCJB) - Woofferton. Arabic preaching at 2130 to NAf, fair signal until s/off 2145, Apr 23.

Shortwave Broadcast / R. Sakha - Yakutsk
« on: April 25, 2018, 0205 UTC »
7345   RUSSIA (AS).   NVK R. Sakha - Yakutsk. Lovely clear signal at fair strength, at 1055 with Russian pop song. Time pips and a clear ID at 1100, into talk (possibly news?)….until the CNR 1 s/on at 1101 which covered up Sakha. // 7295 which was also in a clear channel but at weaker strength and heavy splash QRM from RTI and CNR 1 jammer on 7300. A Tough one to hear from SE Australia. Any easier for US listeners???

Shortwave Broadcast / Romania - Questionable Freq Choice
« on: April 25, 2018, 0203 UTC »
7325   ROMANIA. RRI - Tiganesti. English to EAs at 2215, fair signal but moderate co-channel QRM from CRI-Kunming in Mandarin to SEAs. Because of this freq choice, reception of RRI may be a problem for listeners in some parts of Asia.

Shortwave Broadcast / WWCR Craziness
« on: April 25, 2018, 0202 UTC »
6115   USA. WWCR - Nashville TN. A crazy American conspiracy theory program called Stop the Crime at 2240. Apparently radio frequencies are killing us. Plus Water Wars. References quoted were YouTube, the Internet and other “reliable” (cough, cough) sources. Started out as a fair signal at 2246 but fading rapidly by 2258 as this band closes for the morning.

Shortwave Broadcast / Hummy Dhabayya
« on: April 25, 2018, 0201 UTC »
5955   UAE. BBC - Dhabayya. English WS to SEAs at 2230 with news. A very hummy audio quality, hard to tell if it’s the txer or an audio feed issue, but certainly not up to BBC standards!

A very nice QSL!  I tried for 4KZ on 5055 this morning, but not even a carrier. Are they on 24/7 or with a limited schedule?

Reportedly to be operating 0500 to 2300 UTC, Chris. i.e. 3pm to 9am local time there.

QSLs Received / 4KZ QSL Arrives - Feels Just Like the Old Days!
« on: January 09, 2018, 1053 UTC »
My 4KZ QSL arrives and the station has gone to quite some effort to produce something special! Embossed QSL, sticker, personal note, and envelope with seal sticker on the back! Reminded me of the old days when the Latin stations used to send lots of stuff and personalise it. Images at the link below.

Software / Re: DX ToolBox 5.0.0 Beta for Windows and macOS

Also, have you considered any facilities for printing out logs? i.e. an Export option into Word, rtf etc? That would be really useful when reporting to radio club newsletters, Facebook groups and sending a reception report via email or snail mail.

Chris,

In the logging view, under mode, there is no provision for DRM. Any reason for that?

Shortwave Broadcast / Radio 4KZ Fires Up! Shortwave's Newest Station
« on: December 20, 2017, 2302 UTC »
Much talked about but slow to get on the air, 4KZ has finally got underway with transmissions this afternoon (December 20), just in time for the Christmas holiday season. Here's my log so far:

5055   AUSTRALIA. 4KZ - Innisfail QLD. Relay of the mediumwave 4KZ first noted at 0840 on Dec 20. Weak signal (much weaker than the 5045 Ozy R.) and mixed with heavy summertime QRN. Pops and occasional adverts, ID at 0852. At 0900, another ID and then news. Also heard on most of the NZ web SDR remotes with the best being at the Bay of Islands site. At 0904, mention made of the 5055kHz shortwave outlet! By 0920, the signal strength had improved considerably to a reasonably strong and steady level.

This station should be audible into Asia, the Pacific and the west coast USA. Get your ears on!!

Here's my video of last night's reception:

UPDATE:
Radio 4KZ has already been heard by Mauno Ritola in Finland and Ron Howard in California. Power is believed to be around 1kW, licenced for 1.6 kW EIRP. Not a bad effort for the first day of transmission!

73 and good DX to you all.  Rob VK3BVW

Shortwave Broadcast / D.P.R.K - 3250, 3320
« on: December 15, 2017, 2327 UTC »
3250   D.P.R.KOREA. VoK - Pyongyang. Japanese service fading in at 1030 (9:30 pm local AEDT). The time pips came through OK but dialogue and music was mixed in with the noise at this time of night. Improves in strength as the evening progresses, Dec 15.

3320   D.P.R.KOREA. PBS - Pyongyang. Korean anncts and sugary orchestral music at 1040, stronger than 3250….but not much! Dec 15.

Shortwave Broadcast / Indonesia & PNG
« on: December 15, 2017, 2326 UTC »
3325   INDONESIA & PNG. RRI - Palangkaraya and NBC Bougainville at 1045 (9:45pm AEDT), both with pop ballad style programming and anncts. NBC was a touch stronger at a fair level with summer atmospherics in the background. Dec 15.
