Shortwave Broadcast / Re: The Voice of Russia Mystery Continues…..
« on: December 09, 2013, 2034 UTC »
It's interesting to note that nowhere in the new media Act signed by Putin does it say that the shortwave service has gone. Nor in the VoR statement released today was there any mention of the end of the SW services. But the name Voice of Russia has changed! It seems to be a re-organisation of the services under a new umbrella organisation.

Further to the above:

Today, a report from the Kremlin - http://www.kremlin.ru/acts/19805 - states that Putin has signed a decree that calls for re-organisational change of state-owned media, and the "elimination" of VoR (along with other divisions). However….it does not say that Russia is leaving shortwave! Interesting.

I'm not sure VoR staff knows what is going on. I suspect any decisions about the future of the station are made much higher up than at the VoR staff level. When first reports of closure came out, a few DXers wrote to the station but staff seemed unaware of any proposed changes. They haven't endorsed nor denied any changes. Speculation abounds! Great fodder for gossip hounds though!  ;D

Hi ssfahrer!  The NF list is developed from observed frequency changes here in Melbourne from the start of the B13 transmission period at the end of October. Only changes to frequency or station operation are noted on this list. Re. 3215 - in the time period that we can listen to the 90mb in our evenings from 1000 to around 2000 (it's the start of summer here), I noted no new frequency changes. 3215 does make it here but not regularly, the best time being our winter or when thunderstorm noise is lower. Re. 4840, this is heard regularly in the evenings, but cops a lot of splash from ABC Alice Springs on 4835. Again, no frequency changes were noted here.

Yes, the tropical bands do exist here also.  :)  And as evidence of that, I noted a frequency change only this last weekend for 3965 - Iran from Kamalabad at 1745 (4:45am EDST), as listed in my recent blog post http://medxr.blogspot.com.au/2013/12/the-new-radio-mara-plus-vanuatu-sudan.html. But as you know, the tropical bands don't often see frequency changes that align themselves with the twice yearly transmission schedule changes.

And, as you asked, also as evidence of shortwave activity on the 90-60mb, can I suggest you check out my survey of LA stations observed during our last winter period? While the Latins are much easier for you guys in the States, but they present a real challenge for us Aussies. You'll find it at http://medxr.blogspot.com.au/2013/09/latin-american-survey-2013-available.html

Thanks for your question, and best 73,  Rob VK3BVW

Shortwave Broadcast / The Voice of Russia Mystery Continues…..
« on: December 08, 2013, 1041 UTC »
Rumours of the Voice of Russia's demise have been circulating for months now. Virtually nothing has come out of the state broadcaster itself, but rather mumblings have been published in other external news sources. So…..here's another one - but with a somewhat different slant. This one claims that VoR is wanting to INCREASE its Kurdish language service, not decrease it or close the service down! It really makes me wonder what the REAL facts are about VoR's future!

Read about it at:

3945   VANUATU.  R. Vanuatu - Port Vila. A fair signal with Bislama programming and mainly talks at 0915. Later, local islander music noted at 0949. R. Nikkei 2 faded in around 0945 but was generally under Vila until later in the evening. Dec 6.

Thanks Pigmeat! Yes, I think they tend to use 5040 more in the winter. But having said that, they can be pretty unreliable in their services….at any time of the year.Must be the laid-back Caribbean way!  ;)

Cheers

Shortwave Broadcast / AIR on 11740 - Not a great freq change!!
« on: November 28, 2013, 2107 UTC »
11740   INDIA.  AIR - Panaji (Goa). S/on 1317 in Dari, NF ex 11670. This creates a mess for 15 minutes because NHK-Kranji in Vietnamese and CNR 2 are also here. It's just mud till the NHK s/off at 1330, then marginally better, Nov 28.

Numerous other freq changes at the link below.

Shortwave Broadcast / Still MORE New Frequency Changes for B13
« on: November 22, 2013, 2032 UTC »
9390   FRANCE.  R. Algerienne - Issoudun. Qu'ran at 2017, powerful NF for B13, but slight co-channel QRM from VOA-Ban Dung in  Korean on Nov 20. Suddenly off at 2058 in the middle of a song. Then a minute later fires up again next door on 9395 kHz with the same song. ID 2101 then news. Don't know why they make this move 5 kHz up - they'd be better to sit on 9395 and avoid VOA altogether. Also, VOA signs off at 2100 anyway!

Another 34 new frequencies also discovered over the last few days. The list is at:

Shortwave Broadcast / Laos, PNG, Bangladesh and more….
« on: November 21, 2013, 1141 UTC »
6130   LAOS.   Lao National Radio - Vientiane. First noted at 1233 with Lao commentary, then into a lovely lilting traditional Laotian ballad at 1239. PBS Xizang was there underneath, but Vientiane was much stronger, Nov 18.

Other DX items also listed at the MEDXR Blog:

Shortwave Broadcast / BOOK REVIEW: Good Morning Hanoi
« on: November 15, 2013, 2241 UTC »
I've just finished reviewing a fascinating book that provides insights into the operations of the English section of the Voice of Vietnam in 2003/04, along with interesting stories of Vietnamese life and customs. A great read! You'll find it at my MEDXR Blog:

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: More New Frequency Allocations
« on: November 10, 2013, 1124 UTC »
In addition to the logs posted at the MEDXR Blog above are the following noted today:

15260   IRAN.  VOIRI - Sirjan. Swahili at 0445 to EAf, a fair signal that went suddenly off at 0449. NF but not sure whether this is ex 13750 (via Sirjan) or 15340 (via Kamalabad). Nov 10.

17640   CHINA.  CRI - Xian. Russian to CAs at 0410, NF and I believe this is replacing 15425, also Xian. Fair to poor signal but also runs // 15445 which is much stronger here, Nov 10.

17725   CHINA. CRI - Xian. English to CAs at 0415, a small NF ex 17730, fair to poor signal on Nov 10. Also runs // 17855 via Beijing but this was no better strength. Best frequency by far was the // 15120 kHz.

17860   PHILIPPINES.  VOA - Tinang. Tibetan service at 0420, NF and only light jamming on this occasion, Nov 10.
