In AM mode its very crunchy or messed up by propagation. In usb its nice and understandable.

Its 0251utc, haven't heard Hummingbird in a while. It was on and off.

I don't think I've heard any of those songs but they were pretty cool. Thanks for the test Hummingbird Radio, looking forward to hearing more.

SDR - Software Defined Radio / Cut down on EMI into SDR?
« on: January 11, 2015, 0620 UTC »
I recall a post about SDRs and computer interference but I couldn't find it.

Problem: humble portable receives better than fancy (expensive) new SDR on the same 43m beverage antenna.

Assumption: the new SDR is getting noise from the computer its connected to.

At 10pm, I've got a -115dBm noise floor on my SDR on the beverage.

I was just listening to a pirate station in USB on my SDR. Its an ELAD FDM-SW2. It plugs into my tower computer and is powered by USB wire.  I could definitely hear more pirate music when my portable was connected to the beverage. My portable is a RadioShack DX 398.

I don't think it was a difference in the speaker but that could be the case. My computer has a 2" speaker compared to portable's 3".

I have a late 90's sound card, 16 bit Creative Sound Blaster ES1371 ES1373. specs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ensoniq_AudioPCI#ES1371_and_ES1373

Is there anything that I can do to lower noise levels?
How do I know when I've got it all?
Are there common culprits that cause EMI to SDRs?

Thanks folks

Just now on 14347usb at 0400utc I heard some ham-sters. One guy was on a boat 117mi from Hawaii getting the weather forecast from a Vancouver guy. Then Vancouver introduced Hawaii to North Dakota guy and they talked. Hawaii at first was difficult to hear but then he was very good as well as Vancouver and N. Dakota.
So Vancouver and Hawaii plan to talk tomorrow morning at 1600utc.  I assume around the same frequency.

Equipment / Antenna noise canceler/ phaser diversity combiner
« on: July 27, 2014, 2113 UTC »
I got a JPS ANC-4 (the same as a timewave ANC-4).  I want to use it as a diversity combiner.  I have attached 2 vertical wires 71feet apart (1/2 wavelength for 6925mhz).  So theoretically I can now steer a reception pattern that look like a figure eight. Do I have this correct?

Can anybody point me in the right direction on information on how to operate the thing?
Thanks.

Equipment / Preamplifier uses
« on: July 17, 2014, 0356 UTC »
I just got a cheap receiving preamplifier. Its a Palomar Engineers and goes from 1.8 - 50mhz.

Does anybody have experience with a preamplifier? It seems like it wouldn't do much on my skyloop because the noise would be amplified too.

I caught some music and it was coming in pretty good. Then I tuned away and came right back and all I heard was a Brittish or European accent man saying  "...on the 31 meter band." And then it went off.  :(

Sounds like old big band or jazz. I heard a jazzy clarinet. Then some band trumpets faded in.

It fades in and out of noise.

Better now. Definitely big bandish music. A male singer. Can't make out words to song.  Noise isn't as bad and very little fading. I switched the polarity on my loop and it came in better. I have alligator clips onto some 75ohm coax that goes out to my skyloop near my house.

off

Cool tunes, There was a reggae-like tune with a white-sounding guy singing.
The set ended with a relaxing song that had a catchy guitar solo.
I didn't hear any ID. I'm pretty sure I was here the whole time it was on.
There was a buzz when silence was transmitted but it went away when the music came on.

Thanks mysterious wonder. I'm going to sleep now.
