I couldn't get to sleep so I decided to stay up and enjoy some excellent programming on Radio Australia's 9580 kHz broadcast.

Excellent news programming, very informative with a great signal SIO - 555, even CRI on 9570 kHz is being good today and isn't splattering all over the place. At least at my location!

Listening with my Tecsun PL-660 receiver, telescopic antenna exclusively, Southern New York.

I just got a tiny MW/FM/SW radio called the Eton Grundig Mini, it comes with a small telescopic antenna and I thought it'd be a good radio to use when I'm out and about so I don't have to lug the Tecsun PL-660 around with me.

I took an evening walk through a large corporate park and into the surrounding wooded area, as the skies darkened I turned my radio on and decided to see what I could pick up. Here's what accompanied me for my walk.

WBCQ 7490 kHz 01:16 UTC - Allan Weiner Worldwide, great signal SIO 555, talk about vintage radios and high power shortwave broadcast transmitters, mild fading. Even as I walked by a building emitting a lot of QRM, WBCQ stayed strong.

Radio Australia 17840 kHz 01:25 UTC - Interview with a classical composer, discussion about the means of composition as well as a classical piece. SIO 454, signal was best as I walked through the wooded area, began to experience whine as I neared a more developed area.

WHRI 5920 kHz 01:40 UTC - Christian music, female singer, plug for the "Harvest Show" with a detailed advertisement about what the aforementioned program consists of. SIO 555 excellent signal, very strong.

China Radio International 6020 kHz 9570 khz and 9580 kHz 01:45 UTC - Discussion of credit cards and other miscellaneous news items, all three frequencies were SIO 555, though 9570 kHz and 9580 kHz would sometimes interfere with each other.

Voice of Greece 9420 kHz 01:50 UTC (to the end at 02:15 UTC) - Excellent variety of greek music, some talk programs near the end, SIO was 555.

Reception from such a tiny radio was impressive, and it was lovely to have picked up some good stations to keep me company on my constitutional.

Finally! In my 4 years as an SWL I have been able to receive the Voice of Korea's English Service, signal is fair, peaking at S9 featuring a variety of North Korean music, ranging from classical to opera. Very nice easy listening music for a very nice morning.

Listening with the Tecsun PL-660 receiver, telescopic antenna only.

Went out to a store today and I was brazen enough to bring my Tecsun PL-660 with me, it was perched in the top compartment of the cart with the antenna partially extended, as I listened via headphones.

WRMI on 11580 kHz was the station of choice, lovely variety of all sorts of World Music from Chinese to South American, from Russian to African it all was there. They even threw in a few english tunes by "James Blunt" who was popular in the Mid 2000s.

Great program, SINPO of 5's across the board.

21
Heard continuously on 6965 kHz on the Twente WebSDR from 1600 UTC through 0100 UTC, still transmitting at the time of this post.

This station appears to broadcast bird calls nonstop with no announcements, ID's or interruptions. Signal varies from S9 +10 to S3. Transmission is in AM mode.

I imagine this station to be a pirate but that notion cannot be proven.

Any further details regarding this station are duly appreciated!

The Mighty KBC with oldies, received with great signal in Southern New York, S9 +20 here.

One of my favorite stations to listen to, glad to see them here for another week!

Shortwave Broadcast / WTWW 5085 kHz at 0241 UTC 4/30/16
« on: April 30, 2016, 0245 UTC »
Blasting in at S9 +20 in Southern New York, nice program of oldies and country music to conclude my Friday. I hope to wake up early tomorrow so I can enjoy some Radio Australia when it propagates well on 9580 kHz.

Listening on my Tecsun PL-660 with just the telescopic antenna.

Shortwave Broadcast / WWRB 5050 kHz at 0247z 4/14/16
« on: April 14, 2016, 0249 UTC »
WWRB blasting in on 5050 kHz with talk by the station manager, ongoing lecture about Airplanes, Pirate Radio, and periodic pitches to buy airtime. Jazz music was also observed.

Signal is S9 +20 and recent broadcasts have been much more interesting to listen to than the constant Brother Stair relays of days past.

Listening in Southern New York with a Tecsun PL-660 shortwave receiver, telescopic antenna only.

7445 kHz - SINPO 45444 Very good signal, talk in English of current events. This broadcast to me is the BBC's North American service, though I know this isn't the target area. Still, the signal is very good and I do wish that this frequency was used for more than just 1 hour.

6005 kHz - SINPO 31432 Good signal, very strong interference from Radio Havana Cuba's English Service on 6000 kHz. For the most part it's unable to be listened to due to said interference, despite the presence of a good signal.

QTH is Southern New York, Receiver is a Tecsun PL-660 with the telescopic antenna.

I was checking out the 19m band via the Twente WebSDR the other night when it was propagating well in Europe, and to my surprise I found a broadcast of China Radio International's Indonesian Service, STILL using the old interval signal from the Radio Peking era broadcasts.

They used "The East is Red" IS and the standard Interval Signal for CRI, the old IS hasn't been in use for at least 20 years at this point.

Very interesting to still see it broadcast, intentionally or otherwise.

Of course, it wouldn't be a proper post like this without a recording of what I heard, so the Soundcloud link is provided below.

All the best,

Shortwave Broadcast / CKZN on 6160 kHz 0713 UTC
« on: October 18, 2015, 0717 UTC »
The low-power station in Newfoundland Canada, CKZN is making it into New York exceptionally well in this late hour.

I'm glad I stayed up for something at least!

Coming in with a good signal, S9 with CBC News followed by an interesting philosophical program via ABC Australia.

It's always a pleasure to hear this station and I'm glad that Canada still has a presence on shortwave, even after the loss of the legendary Radio Canada International, several years back.

28
Heard with excellent signals in New York on my Tecsun PL-660 with just the telescopic antenna.

It is usually heard with great signals from 18:00 UTC until 22:00 UTC with programs about African News at 18:00 UTC  the standard English Service from 19:00 to 19:30 UTC, a Learning English broadcast from 19:30 UTC until 20:00 UTC, African music from 20:00 to 21:00 UTC and Western music from 21:00 UTC until 22:00 UTC.

While the broadcast is targeting Africa, I imagine you'd be able to hear it in eastern North America and maybe even in the central portions of the continent too.

Shortwave Broadcast / WRNO back on 7505 kHz in English at 04:00 UTC
« on: September 30, 2015, 0407 UTC »
Coming in here in Southern New York for the first time since March or so, SINPO is all 5's. Christian music is being played.

Nice to see this station back on the airwaves.

MW Loggings / Local WRCR moved from 1300 kHz to 1700 kHz
« on: July 13, 2015, 0002 UTC »
Here in Rockland County New York, north of the city, our local AM station WRCR which has historically broadcast on 1300 kHz with a daytime power of 500 watts, nighttime power of 83 watts has now moved to 1700 kHz.

Likewise, a new transmitter and tower have been constructed, with the daytime power now at 10 kW and the nighttime power at 1 kW.

While the formal move to 1700 kHz takes place tomorrow, 7/13 , they are testing on 1700 kHz now with 3 kW power and 1 kW at night. If you're in the New England/Mid Atlantic region, maybe you'll be able to catch this station if conditions ever allow. Normally, this station broadcasts a mix of adult contemporary music, with talk programs usually in the mornings and weekends.

I wish I could see how far this station could be heard, but since I live about 10 miles from the station, it'll be strong 24/7.
