At 1:30+ UTC Jackson Browne's Runnin On Empty, s9+10 w/some static noise. At 1:41 off with sstv - unlike Al Fansome, I can't decode sstv in my head. So I will have to wait until Al draws a picture of what he saw in his mind and posts it. It did sound interesting - whatever it was. Thanks to the relay station op for the show !

I have the MFJ 1045C that I have used with the DX-390 and a 15 foot piece of insulated wire thumb tacked around the ceiling of my room. Both radio and preselector operated off batteries. This was what I used during thunderstorms when I had to disconnect the outside antennas and power down other radios. It worked quite well in tuning in pirates. I remember switching from an R-75 and a very long wire antenna mounted really high above the ground to this setup while listening to Ground Zero Radio in the middle of a massive storm. The signal didn't drop off at all. I haven't used it in years, but when I did it worked well. It always improved reception - sometimes just a little, and sometimes quite a lot. I only used it with the  DX-390 portable, so I don't know this for a fact - but I think the smaller portables benefit more from it's use than a higher end tabletop would.
:) just my experience

Equipment / Re: Help pulling in Pirate radio stations

You say you have a tree about 12 feet from your window. You could put together a end-fed wire antenna and mount one end as high up in the tree as you can get it. Coil the rest of the antenna and lead together and conceal them at the base of the tree or hanging from a low limb. When it is dark at night, you can go out and attach the other end of the antenna to another object in your yard (tree, fence post, deck rail, etc.) and feed the lead through your window. Even though the antenna might not be high above the ground, the extra length (and just being outside the house) should make a big difference. Maybe a lot of trouble....but it might be worth the effort   :)
