The RF Workbench / Re: Beyond 45/48m
« on: June 05, 2022, 2359 UTC »
What's this thing run on?  Power-wise.  Ya know like a car battrey?  Does it require an oscilloscope to tune coz I don't have one.  LOL.  Is it just a board with stuff soddered on?  So I need to put it inside a proper radio?
Sorry to seem thick, I just see tiny surface mounted things, bondage wiring, and a capacitor big as....well.  Does it go inside a radio you sell?  I don't know what to make of the pictures.  Christal?

Equipment / Re: 'CB' amplifier for HF

I couldn't tell you about Texas Star, but I have had zero problems with old linears on 10-40's meters with stuff like Pride, Grey, even a generic looking 100 watt HME box.  I believe the old ones generally worked 3-30 mhz.  Now I DID have problems with my only expensive purchase, the RM Italy about 10 years ago.  It was I believe a 150, fan or two on top, knob band selector on the left, billed as 1.8-30mhz.  Absolute P. O. S.  Tested on the bench with a Cobra stock CB.  Worked ok, but not real impressed with output.  Mobile I could not get it to work >90% of the time.  I tried everything 1-10 watt input, connections, 10m, 40m.  No reason why it decided to work once for a minute then not.  Other amps worked just fine.  Luckily got my $ back.
So gitcha an old cheaper one.  Only issues I have had with them is fuse getting sizzly from age and poor connection.  So chop off and add new wire with fuse.  I have also never had to replace a cap in any of the 4 I have which is amazing.  If you 'chaw' minutes+ straight at a time, put a fan on top.

Guessing Ukranian guy.  Plays Metallica, Rammstein, etc.  Frequent images in the waterfall.  He has quite the signal and has been on the last few evenings so probably again tonight.

I'd stick an image or two here but I don't use photo junk online.  Be prepared for mangled English spelling and penises.

The RF Workbench / Tried a 270-030 replacement
« on: May 29, 2020, 1931 UTC »
2 mH 5A choke from Mouser.  Did it work? Yes, but a bit overdriven even at lower volume.  RA told me never found a replacement that sounded as good as the original Shack part and I believe him.  $5 for this experiment bypassing a choke in a working clone into a dummy load of course.
If you want to see exactly what I tried, part # 80-SC-05-20J

Had all but one of these.  Definitely Tecsun 600 to 880.  Ported out to large speakers is awesome.

EEEwwwww, Frank's and Tabasco?  Vinegar ick low potency.  If you need to go mainstream, at least try El Yucateco red.  Hotter and not vinegary. Two bucks at the Walworld.  I have since become self actualized and make my own habanero sauce about every other weekend.  Trinidad scorpion peppers getting grown out back next spring to see how they are.

Huh? / Re: Kim Shattuck, Punk Musician Who Led the Muffs, Dies at 56
« on: October 04, 2019, 0001 UTC »
It fuckin killed me reading about it on punknews.org this morning. She was so nice.  We exchanged some emails in the later 90s. She had an early macbook. Set me up with a fakebook for guitar of the first three albums.  Handwritten, verse/chorus/bridge shit with chords written above the lyrics.  Try to get that shit nowadays emailing your songwriting guitar idol.  Fuck I am so bummed out and drinking.   Nobody else writes perfect three minute 3-4 chord punk melodic shit like Kim did. I had no idea she had ALS.  She just released the Coolies EP and another Muffs CD of old recordings will drop 10/20.  Shit.

Equipment / Re: Advice on Tecsun vs Sony
« on: February 05, 2019, 2229 UTC »
I have both the Sony 7600 and the Tecsun 880.  I never listen to the Sony anymore.  Tecsun hears better, tunes easier especially ssb no comparison.  Rechargeable battery via usb which hardly ever needs charging.  Why do I have that damn Sony sitting around still?  I guess for trips and stuff where if it was stolen I wouldn't really care.

General Radio Discussion / Re: Resource Advice

Simple dipole, pretty much any type of copper wire.  Inverted v at least 20 feet up at the center.  Ends off the ground.  Start with a bit too much wire and twist in the ends a bit at a time and check with swr meter if transmitting.  If receiving then no need to get it within inches of good swr.  Yeah drawback is transmitting you need to pick a small frequency range you want it to behave well on.  Ya prolly got the shit laying around to build an almost free one.  Chunk of coax going to center was ever my only real cost.  You can leave extra wire on the ends twisted inward if you want to ever go down lower in freq.  Easier to chop off wire than add some if you are off resonance a bit.

I read it last night and it saddened me.  I must have listened to Singles Going Steady hundreds of times.  Now he can be reunited with his POS Starway guitar.  He said something like it was like playing a 2x4 with strings up a half inch.  Legend has it he broke the sob in half.
