Shortwave Broadcast / Vanuatu!
« on: March 07, 2024, 0829 UTC »
About 0710UTC, I checked my radio one last time before bed Mar 7 and noted Vanuatu in with a good signal.

First time I’ve heard them on air in months, last time was early last fall maybe, on 9960, drowned out by WRMI 9955.

I haven’t heard 7260 in 6 plus months.. if they’re on, I WILL hear them

Shortwave Broadcast / Reactivated Ethiopia 6090khz?
« on: February 20, 2024, 0455 UTC »
I think Amhara State Radio in Ethiopia has reactivated/refurbished/repaired their 6090 khz transmitter. I absolutely scan the lower broadcast bands, 5800 to 6200 nightly here and havent heard even a carrier until this past Saturday.

My email to a  few friends on Saturday night

They’re listed with a 0356UTC sign on, I’ve never heard them.

You’d expect the transmitters sites there to be pretty ramshackle

Well today about 0330 I had music that was very decidedly African continent sounding. Just a long ass instrumental…. Signal was acutually pretty good.  Modulation wasn’t great but it was better than Iran, Cuba and Cairo.

The only Possible thing I heard would be Amhara state radio… but this sounded quality wise, too good to be them, but based on the music, it had to be them… I think

Notes from email on Mon Feb 19th

Almost positive this is Ethiopia now.

Heard music about 0305 tonight but it was the same long instrumental tune ….heard it fade out and start again.    Then around 0352 or so a guy talked…. Heard actual music with singing after him, then about 0401 a lady with what sounded like news.

Voice wasn’t as well modulated as music … signal peaked about 0330 for me and started getting worse by 0346

Going on right now as a test while they work on some modulation stuff and do tests with new gear. No idea how long this will last.

I've noticed something interesting about Radio Nacional de Amazonias

They're LISTED on till 0300 but ever since the start of A23 or about the time change in the US, theyd been going off at 0200.

I surmise that may have been, at one point, because China had an 11780 00-01 and 02-03 at some point.

Well, the last 3 nights, ive heard 6180 and 11780 Brazil sail past the 0200 usual sign off and in fact, sail way past the 0300 sign off.. staying on till about 0330 or so.. though i havent been at my radio exactly when they go off, so i cant say for sure.

But they are my current favorite SW station so ive been paying them close attention.

MW Loggings / Mexico In Alaska!
« on: January 09, 2024, 1501 UTC »
Sun Jan 7th
XERDO 1060 Matamoros, Tamaulipas,  near Brownsville TX. 7pm I almost passed this up thinking it was KTNS Fresno, CA that I heard just the day before. I don't speak any spanish and understand only the very basics, but I heard "La Raza" mentioned in the way a slogan would be mentioned then what was clearly an X Call letter being mentioend and the typical mexico station id thats so long, I joe the station ID's everything including the location of the kitchen sink. Heard again even better nearly 53 minutes later with a man talking.

Mon Jan 8th
XEW 900 Mexico City heard at 612pm AK Jan 8th 4000 miles away with man talking, sounded like a long form interview of some kind. Signal held out for 10 minutes!

Shortwave Broadcast / So you think you've heard a strong signal?
« on: November 30, 2023, 1847 UTC »
This is Radio Nacional Amazonias, 11780khz, 100kw beamed at 340 degrees azimuth from a site 20 miles NW of Brasilia. Their target is the Amazon region of Latin America.  (6180 is listed at 344 deg, 11780 shows 0 deg but that would indicate, depending on your interpretation, 359/360 deg or Non directional.. neither of which is true) I've seen a map in a video of their transmitter site that indicates the 11780 pattern skews a slight bit more NW then 6180.

The smack dab center of their main lobe for 11780 comes within about 500 miles of me, which is almost nothing in the world of higher powered HF comms. I am at exactly the right place for a 2nd or 3rd hop alolng with often having just the right amount of daylight or darkness. I know plenty people spread out over the lower 48 who don't have as good of a signal as I do.

And to think, I'm about 5000 miles away from their target audience.

Shortwave Broadcast / Radi0 208, 5970khz Denmark heard in Alaska
« on: October 29, 2023, 2233 UTC »
I'm always way behind on processing and uploading my audio but I wanna share some of the better logs

I heard Radio 208 on 5970khz from Denmark on Tuesday October 17th at 0508UTC with The Rolling Stones "Ruby Tuesday"

Not a great signal and kidna noisy, but not bad for 200 watts into a 2x12 meter horizontal dipole heard at my QTH in McGrath, alaska

Here's my audio recording: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LeWRrzcM_Ooa4IgejENNHTn8K8OBEsg8/view?usp=sharing

I use a TEF6686 radio, 15 ft Wellbrook loop, DXEngineering Preamp and EmTech ZM2 Antenna tuner.

UNID'd Help Needed! 6190khz and 7390khz, 1800UTC Wed Sept 20. Heard at my QTM in western Alaska with the same short,  single patriotic march type music tune on a loop over and over with dead air gaps in between each playing., 6190 was weak but audible. 7390 was much clearer and stronger.

No ones listed on those frequencies at this time. Who is it? I have a crude audio recording at the link below of what I heard

Shortwave Broadcast / An Interesting Day On SW In Alaska....
« on: September 10, 2023, 2107 UTC »
WELLLLL.. it's been a VERY interesting day on Shortwave radio so far!

I heard World Music Radio on 15700khz from Denmark at 2002UTC playing a spanish merengue type song followed by a station jingle then a slower more laid back yet not a ballad type spanish song. Station is licensed for 2KW beaming at 180 degrees azimuth but only runs 300 watts! SINPO was 45344.

Then I had VOA Afrique with hit music on 9470khz via Botswana at 2024UTC, they switch to Hausa at 2030UTC also on 9470khz via Sao Tome & Principe. Well, STP signed on 2 minutes early with the french transmission still playing music and STP fired off the "This is the Voice Of America, Washington DC signing on" followed by Yankee Doodle.
