Equipment / Re: Copper Clad Steel
« on: November 03, 2019, 1626 UTC »
Attenuation due to the copper over steel may be an issue, but I am not sure that I have seen a difference in my long feeds to NDB antennas.

What is possibly a bigger issue is this: these cables tend to have a higher DC resistance per kM than pure copper constructions.  If you try to power an active antenna which draws appreciable current - say 60 to 100 mA - over the cable, the DC voltage drop may be an issue.

Kinda the calm before the storm.  Most of the low hanging fruit has been picked, and any domestics require a lot of digging.  South America is starting to show up more frequently.  PAL 365 in Ecuador is there nightly, as is GPI in Colombia.

The RF Workbench / Re: NCP driver sucks
« on: October 15, 2019, 1843 UTC »
Per my post in a previous thread...

"I would leave a small amount of R in series with the gates for two reasons;

1. it helps dampen any tendency of the network and other strays to ring (Better drive waveforms).

2. should a transistor failure occur, it prevents the output of the driver from going complete short circuit.  I have lost a few drivers due to transistor failure,  No more once a little R was added.  I'm using three 10 ohm 1206 resistor in parallel to make a wider low L resistor, and also spread the dissipation."

+-RH

Quite a few years ago I designed a dual 400 watt MOSFET PSU based switcher for x-ray tubes (final output was up to +/- 200 kV).  I also found that a small resistance in series with the gate drive was good protection.

The frequency was a bit lower than 43 meters  ;D

X-ray tubes...I hear those things are dangerous!

Seems like YQ gone now; not a trace in last nite's recording.  No trace of LT Alert either.

Even w/o YQ there, logging LT will still be tough.  At 82.5N, it is the most northerly NDB.  Right behind it is YEU 205 in Eureka, NU at 80.0N.  I have logged that once in each of the 2 prior seasons, but not yet this year.

Gentlemen; start your search engines.

Much as we hate to see any NDB go silent, I'm OK with this one.  YQ blocks reception of the Holy Grail of NDBs for NA DXers, LT 305 in Alert, NU.

Although there are hundreds of LT logs by European DXers, AFAIK there is only one log of it here in NA.
