General Radio Discussion / Re: Pirates on 8mHz band?
« on: September 15, 2013, 0008 UTC »
There was a pirate back in the 1980s called KBFA "Broadcaster's of Free America" that used 8.000 Mhz many times.  I don't know if there have been others in recent times, but this oldie stands out in my mind.

BBR S4-S6, thanks for the heads-up!

An old log, from Labor Day morning, but here's another from the SDR recording that was logged about an hour after KMTL was heard as mentioned in a previous thread.  This one is new here:

760 KTKR San Antonio, TX. 1120 UTC 9/2/2013 - Weak but clear under phased WJR, presumed on day pattern with a string of ads for some San Antonio businesses including Red McCombs Toyota on I-10 and others.  No official ID, but this is good enough for the log book.  I'm surprised any signal makes it up this way after looking at their pattern:

Anyone remember the lunatic rantings of "The Crooked Man" from the late 80s?  This is very similar, except the Crooked Man interjected music between rants.  Excellent S9+ signal here.

Nice selection of music tonight, great to hear X-FM again!

« on: September 07, 2013, 1126 UTC »
Great copy of Radio Madang right now on 3260 with local talk and local flavored music.  S6, fairly solid with little fade.  Nothing else notable from PNG coming in on 90 meters, which is a bit odd.

Very weak here and just above the noise floor.  I heard "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" theme also.

No pescadores or RTTY on 1710 :-)

You just reached Michigan with no problem :-)  S5-S7.

S6 or so here but I experienced a big signal boost during the Depeche Mode song as it spiked to S9+ for a few minutes, then back down again.

I was able to confirm that I was hearing Mauretania last night by comparing audio to their webstream.  Though gone from shortwave, you can catch their live audio stream here: http://www.radiomauritanie.mr/rm/

jFarley, I'm using the DX Tools Quantum phaser.

WBBM (along with the other Chicago blowtorches) are very difficult to null at my location, maybe because I'm battling groundwave+skywave, I don't really know.  WBBM normally reads S9+35 on the Perseus but I'm able to get it down to S9 and that's good enough to hear some weak audio sneak through on 783, as I'm hearing again right now as I type this.  These are really the only stations that I have trouble with phase-nulling.  Other big guns like 1030 WBZ Boston, which throw a S9+30 signal my way, are no match for the phaser.  I can usually phase them right down into the dust.  Here's a nice example of this, when I caught Oregon on 1030 while phasing-nulling WBZ:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rea6p96rVTI

One more example of phasing:  I have a strong S9+45 local on 850 that I was able to phase down in order to catch Spain on 855.  This clip shows my local before and after phasing to reveal the weak signal on 855: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtllxHT1v6E

It's a great tool for medium wave!

I assembled the best clips from that night and posted them here:

If you're into BCB DX then check it out.  There's nothing like hearing exotic stuff like this on the AM dial!  I still get a rush when I replay it.

I'm glad some other listeners including refmo and BDM were able to catch this too.
