HF Beacons / Re: Unknown beeping - dashes on 7949.5 khz

interesting find!

By the way, if I hear something and post within minutes the forum time stamp s already in UTC  (most beacons are heard in CW mode).

Such as this message's timestamp in the header is  December 19, 2022, 0427 UTC

If my intercept is not "real time" then I do add in the date and time

Another thing that is super helpful is to have an idea of where you heard things and what sort f receiver and antenna. If I use a remote SDR I'll name it.

CS sweeping 4109.2 to 4109.6, about S6 on KPH

I did not catch the exact time but CS did come back on the air sometime after 9 AM. I guess for now it can be considered a daytime only beacon until Beaconpop can make repairs.

The sweep is from 4109.2 to 4109.6 which might be a little lower in frequency, probably due to the cold weather.

I just checked the KFS Omni and there is a good signal from CS

I did listen with the KFS Omni but no joy. It is cloudy on the NorCal coast

I wonder if CS's solar panel is knocked over and only gets partial daylight which wouldn't keep the battery healthy.

Stendec

That's a great report! I'll try to listen in the morning from sunrise on and see what I hear.

Both seem to have UHF band plans

USA 99
AZIMUTH:   134.8 SE
ELEVATION:   42.6

USA 115  aka Milstar
AZIMUTH:   184.1 S
ELEVATION:  52.5

The Milstar system provides uplink communications at extremely high frequency (EHF), 44 GHz, and ultrahigh frequency (UHF), 300 MHz, and downlink communications at super-high frequency (SHF), 20 GHz, and UHF, 250 MHz. The crosslinks operate in the 60 GHz region. Survivability and endurability requirements are satisfied by anti-jam, hardening and system autonomy features.

Based on  the document at this link
https://www.jhuapl.edu/Content/techdigest/pdf/V30-N02/30-02-Oetting.pdf

The page 107 illustration shows that MUOS cannot downlink at 243 MHz

So that leaves the possibility of USA 227 since Skynet 4F is further east and lower on the horizon.

Az-El is for my current location

USA 227    aka Quasar 13   Comsat / Relay, early warning
AZIMUTH:   152.7 SSE
ELEVATION    43.5

MUOS 1  - MUOS was originated as part of a WCDMA system. Was it repurposed to a frequency hopping system?
AZIMUTH:   151.2 SSE
ELEVATION:  44.8

MUOS 5   - MUOS was originated as part of a WCDMA system. Was it repurposed to a frequency hopping system?
AZIMUTH:   156.3 SSE
ELEVATION:  43.2

SKYNET 4F    4 SHF transponders (all), 2 UHF transponders (all), 2 C-band transponders (#D-F)
AZIMUTH:   125.5 SE
ELEVATION:  18.7

I may have to go back to the garage and pull out the AV-2011

I started performing a spectrum survey to get an idea of what UHF SatCom transponders are in view to the SE here and ran across 243.785 to 243.8450 with what looks like frequency hopping.

Rough heading of SE from my location in Orange County, Calif

Anyone have info or ideas?

HF Beacons / Re: Letter "F" Beacon on 4100.4 @ 0715z
« on: December 06, 2022, 1548 UTC »
I ran into something similar where the DW beacon’s “whoop” sound seemed to sweep downward despite a spectrum display showing the upward RF sweep. Putting the radio into the “CW-R” mode was the cure.

From the 7200 manual:

The CW-R (CW Reverse) mode receives CW signals on the reverse sideband like that of the LSB and USB modes.
Use when interference is near the desired signal and when you want to shift the tone of the interfering signal.

Push MODE one or more times to select the CW mode.
Hold down MODE for 1 second to select the CW or CW-R mode
