I have a slow dasher on 4109.43 about S5-S6 on the KFS SE kiwi

I sent you an email for a QSL e-card and forgot to ask for a schematic. What voltage do your solar panels put out open circuit and what current at short circuit? Or do you know the maximum power point (MPPT) figure? What are you using to upconvert the battery voltage to 12 volts?

As soon as it is running be sure to post a more exact frequency for us so we can positively ID it. I'm looking forward to hearing it!

Congratulations on the beacon build! It's a lot of fun to build solar powered gear to emplace in the wilderness. I heard Archer a little while ago on the KFS omni kiwi. Will email for the e-QSL card

Comments:

For protecting your solar panel wires try this metal braid which worked well for my little dataloggers:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/302205006382?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

It will expand quite a bit in diameter. I use a metal snake pushed through the braid and tape my wires on the end then pull it back through. A little bit of camo paint on the braid tones down the shininess. The biters and nibblers have never bothered wires protected by this stuff as I think the braid exterior gets pretty rough after expanding.

Instead of wires through drilled holes I would go to BNC bulkhead connectors with a rubber washer.

You can use the BNCs for the DC power from the solar panels too.

Then seal the external connectors with a self fusing tape like this

Fading in and out of the KFS SE kiwi this morning.

New beacon?

Wow! Windy reports 129F  at 1910 Z (1210 CA time).

And DW may not have survived this heatwave -- not being heard either direct or on the KFS SDR.

Beacon L has also gone silent   :( :-\ :'(

Beacon L is also missing today.  :( :( :(

It was big and strong earlier today. Windy is still hanging in there so it is odd that DW and L disappeared on the same day when both had survived such high heat yesterday.

Hopefully there is not some jealous radio vigilante out there hunting down harmless hobby beacons but instead it will turn out to be a case of heat stroke for some weak Chicom components in DW and L.

DW is silent this morning. I last listened around 10 PM PST last night and DW was there with the other 4 MHz beacons. Battery was normal at 13.1 and temps were in the 90's as I recall. No signal at all this morning although Windy and "Beacon L" have decent signals here at home. Hopefully DW will be back soon.

I was thinking the same thing, it says BEACON L, so maybe its name should be L.

I noticed this beacon yesterday, but I have no idea how long it has been active, yesterday was literally the first day I have looked at this freq area in more than a week.

T!

I've been logging data every day from a couple of beacons this month (except on the 5th) and always have the panadaptor on. "L" has a big signal that really sticks out so I'm going with yesterday as the launch. Unless someone PM's me with some "rumors" about deployment (and tech details).      8)

A few observations. The battery has only moved up by a tenth of a volt this morning so must be a small AH solar panel and "large" AH  battery. Temps seem to indicate a desert-ish area. Reading temp in Celsius without tenths of a degree seems a bit coarse compared to reading in Fahrenheit.

I've added this new L beacon to the master list. Congratulations to the creator for launching something new!

Jim

Maybe I got things wrong and the first dash is just a marker in the sequence. So I will just call this “Beacon L”

Signal strength is still high here at home. Battery voltage is unchanged at this posting at 12.9 and temp is at 33.
