If Windy's creator reads this thread I'd bet they'd be happy to know I can also hear Windy in Hawaii right now

Does anyone know if Common and Precious is active? Any related posts about it seem pretty old.

The last I heard, one or more of the Common and Precious beacons were off the air due to damage, and this was as you noted quite some time ago.

Thanks! I will update the beacon lists today

I've been reading up on propagation and looked up a near real time map of f0F2 and guessed I should try a kiwi SDR in Hawaii.

There was DW with a pretty nice signal whooping away.

4095.650 KHz  DW the Desert Whooper. +20 dB over the noise.  BAT  13.1   O TMP 52   I TMP 59   PV  0
4102.840 KHz  Windy. Good signal, +20 dB over the noise. Light breeze. Temp 53  B is 11.9

Both heard on both of my HF radios but Elecraft Panadapto is handier for gauging signal strength..

HF Beacons / Re: Power output of MX beacons?
« on: March 25, 2021, 2311 UTC »
I've been thinking about this topic for a while. From what I had read the beacons were used by the Russian Navy as propagation indicators and channel markers. If so, they would want radiated power similar to the ships and airplanes that might be looking to use a particular frequency to contact their bases. Antenna arrays might be omni unless they wanted to designate channels paired with particular areas of operation and employ directional arrays.

I've made some updates to the the active beacons list. Please take a look and see if there are other beacons that are not active anymore.

4095.650 KHz  Desert Whooper. The whoops are easy to pick out but it is pretty weak. Telemetry is hard to read
4102.840 KHz  Windy. Heard some dits and had to use an SDR to see if Windy was even operating. (it was)
