During severe solar storming though, all bets are off. A real life HF 80m example -  A friend lives 13 km from me - we both have real antennas and a low noise environment.  We are completely line of sight and can work with microwatts on VHF/UHF.  Yet conditions have been bad enough that on 3.7 mhz between us even several kw just barely gets a readable signal.  During normal conditions, a few watts would be plenty.  This has happened several times, to varying degrees and had I not experienced this, I'd be skeptical as to how we couldn't get a signal those few miles.

Good signal near Edmonton, Alberta at 0246 utc... well over the local static crashes.  And I see RTN is listening remotely here as well...

General Radio Discussion / Re: Solar panels and RFI
« on: May 09, 2016, 1520 UTC »
Nothing from the panels themselves, but the associated charge controllers (esp if PWM) for the batteries and inverters etc can and are likely to cause significant amounts of noise. Steps can be taken to reduce the noise but when it's not your installation --- good luck!

That supply has way more capability than you need but even worse, it is a switcher and not something I'd want to use for this application. Some switchers are VERY electrically noisy.  Get an older linear wall wart, it will work fine and you likely have one tucked away in a junk drawer from some old device.. or get one from a second hand store for almost nothing.  Most newer ones are switchers - very light weight compared to the older linear ones that have a transformer.

Certainly coming in well tonite into Alberta, noted a bit after 0400 working split with tx on 14290 and listening down 10; and later working simplex on 14280.  I had contacted them on the first night so didn't call, it's not like they were lonely - there are lots of callers!

Check the power supply voltage (under the load of the Perseus). It needs to be pretty close to 5.0 volts.  Just because the LED's are lit, doesn't mean it's getting the right voltage.

6030 Calgary is definitely on the air.  I have several SDR's that can be accessed remotely (on the Perseus client and also an SDR-IQ on the SDR Anywhere client) that hear 6030 during the daytime here as it is semi local to me.
