MW Loggings / MW season conclusion
« on: May 02, 2017, 1220 UTC »
2016-2017 solar activity continued downward trend, but it feels that season did not completely fulfill my overtly high expectations. (as if ever...) There were some excellent openings that followed the established 28-day cycle. However, between the peaks there were several miserable weeks with a lot of aurora and serious geomagnetic disturbances. At no point were there conditions like 1997, when transatlantic stations were booming all night long every night for a week or two. Peaks were high, ebbs were abyssmal.

As solar activity is expected to continue to the bottom towards 2018-2019, the expectations for next season couldn't possibly be higher, bringing even more disappointments. As Samuel Beckett famously said, fail again, fail better!  8)

That said, during the good conditions of season 2016-2017, as short as they may have been (1-2 nights in row), the quality and depth was very good if not even excellent.

I have always been lazy to send reception reports, but still I somehow managed to collect 40 new NA stations this season. What is even more remarkable, I verified 7 new US states. This is a number I haven't achieved since I was listening in Lapland the last time, and that was around 1995. I even logged my very first "real" graveyard station, 1240 WJMC Rice Lake WI. (CBG Gander doesn't count  ;) ) Difference between Lapland and Southern Finland is significant, so I can only be very happy for this successful season.

Also this season proved me something I had suspected all along: as the European megawatt stations have closed down, there is a lot of free space on dial and successful MW dxing is possible even in semi-urban surroundings. While preparing for this season in our local club we concentrated in lowering the noise level as much as possible, which is not so easy in modern environment. Frequencies 1490-1540 are still unusable thanks to unidentified interference from the direction of 550 metres NA wire. The more or less questionable resistor and grounding system that makes the wire a beverage antenna either works or doesn't. At the very least the grounding attempt didn't cause harm.

In addition to North America, the big thing to me was India on MW. Already early in autumn around September I noticed that common All India Radio stations had a nice signal with a 600 metres 80 degrees Asia wire. In the same time I discovered All India Radio online reporting form that I used very actively during this season. Result: 29 AIR transmitting sites verified, all with a local id, and several logged stations still not answered. All India Radio Spectrum Manager even sent postal qsls for online reports, in the extreme case 6 transmitting sites confirmed in one card. Fabulous!

I still could send follow-up reports, if I bother. Funny enough, with Perseus and bandwith recordings the problem is no more how to listen to station. The problem is how to find a cooperative contact at the station. I can only thank and respect those people for example at Relevant Radio, who keep confirming reports one after another.

Log 16-18 Jan 2017, part 3: 1290-1530 kHz. Final report!

They used to say that two weeks in Lapland equals 10 years of listening in South Finland. That was in past, with traditional radio equipment. Since sdr recordings arrived, two nights with good conditions in South Finland equals two weeks in Lapland with traditional equipment. 255 ID clips in folder, doubles and triples included, some 160 different stations. I have sometimes come back home from Lapland dx-pedition with less results. In fact, I have always had less results.

One final thought. Sometimes I should try some relaxing hobby. Do you know one?

MW Loggings / AIR on MW
« on: January 10, 2017, 1420 UTC »
So, what else since I wrote here last time...

Indians on MW. Everywhere. Strongest channels in Finland have been 648 Indore, 666 Delhi B, 747 Lucknow, 846 Ahmedabad, 918 Suratgarh, 954 Najibabad, 990 Jammu and 1071 Rajkot FS in urdu. On 1080 there is Rajkot DRM that can be seen as a 9 kHz wide flat block of noise.

Sample: http://www.teknokekko.fi/dx/as/1143_AIR_Rohtak_111116_0025.mp3 Opens broadcast day with Vande mataram.

Those stations can be heard almost every evening with 700 m wire antenna, that has proved to be excellent tool also to China and Australia.

Since September I have listened to so many hours of All India Radio that I know the routine by heart now. This is what an All-Purpose India Reception Report looks like:

1515 Regional programme.
1529 Local id.
1530 News at Nine from Delhi in English.
1545 AIR advertisements.
1546 Commentary from Delhi or Local programme.
1559 Local id.
1600 Regional programme.
1614 Local id. (optional)
1615 Regional news.
1629 Local id.
1630 Raga concert.
1729 Local id.
1730 News from Delhi in English.
1735 News from Delhi in Hindi.
1740 Local id.
1741 Sign-off or Local extra news (optional).

0023 Int-sign.
0025 Vande mataram.
0026 Local id.
0026 Morning raga.
0029 Local id.
0030 News from Delhi in Hindi.
0035 News from Delhi in English/Urdu or Regional programme.

As we know, AIR Spectrum Manager verifies sporadically. An aspect of lotto drawing is always involved. However, Spectrum Manager sent me some cryptic mass emails, some of them without header and without content, but with a little detective work I realised I was invited to input my reports in feedback system on page http://pbinfo.air.org.in/feedback/.

Spectrum manager had added my email address in database but he never told me password, so I had to register with another email address.

When you have registered you will notice that users are asked to add telephone number and upload a profile picture. If you try to comply, page shows you error.

Indian coding.  :P

Anyway, this is the way I have received eqsls for 20+ AIR stations during last three months. Some reports have been even verified as a card as well. Which ones, depends again the lotto numbers...

MW Loggings / 891 ABC Adelaide log and qsl
« on: January 10, 2017, 1109 UTC »

891 AUSTRALIA: 5AN ABC Adelaide. 9 Jan 1757-1903.

Technically signal was ok or almost good at times, very deep fading, lasting minutes, and towards the end of listening period more interference from co-channel Algeria. From 14600 km away even some seconds would be something...

In ABC Overnight talk programme they talked about various issues. Sports, Trump, American Democrats, even Super Bowl caught my ear. 1830 Majestic Fanfare and news. 1903 I hear yet “ABC news” but that was the end of it, this time.

MW Loggings / 1629 6ABN Busselton WA.
« on: March 15, 2016, 1103 UTC »
Season is not over!

1629 11.3. 2155-2205 AUS: 6ABN Busselton WA. I admit I was more than puzzled while hearing English on x-band in the middle of South European pirates. Greece on 1628, Balkan on 1631. Even more puzzling was the fact it was Christian talk. What choices there are but Australia? 2200 utc clear id "You are listening to 3ABN Radio Network." Magnetic storm raging, SW very silent, everything upside down, and greyline over Western Australia at the moment, 6 AM local time.

Assistant manager told they have been received previously twice in South Africa, but it's basically all sea between Western Australia and Capetown, so Finland is something else. I replied that it may very well be a case of once in a lifetime, though I have heard two Australian x-banders before. They were both from Queensland.

In image you can see the magnifient transmitter tower of 6ABN giving out knee jerking 400 watts.
