I've seen IBOC on both 1710 USB and 1690 LSB, they fade in and out at the same time and along with the WRCR signal, in fact it was there earlier this morning when I checked. I agree that the signal on 1690 is not always there, perhaps they switch it off at times (I don't know all the details about IBOC).
it would seem kind of nefarious to me for WRCR to switch off the IBOC LSB at nighttime low power operation and leave the IBOC USB on (in my previous screen shot attachment)
i dont see any real purpose to operate in this manner other than to disrupt DX reception at 1710Khz but if their purpose and reason is that 1710khz would carry their IBOC in the clear better than 1690Khz, then so be it.
yes one could use LSB SAM with adjustable bandwidth notch filters to avoid the splatter from the USB IBOC and from WRCR but this would be detrimental to the received audio quality in general on 1710khz.
despite all this, i still believe there is something else operating at 1710 USB that isnt coming from WRCR at night.

Chris, there is definitely something else there on the upper side of 1710Khz and it cant the IBOC from WRCR, see screenshot.
if it was the IBOC from WRCR, wouldnt i see it on the lower side of 1690Khz ?
all the other stations that have IBOC have it on the upper and lower sides, not just on one side.

nothing new to report than the frequent idiots that cannot properly operate and maintain a high power broadcast transmitter.
completely overmodulated with splatter extending up to 50Khz that can typically be heard at 9915Khz and 10015Khz (see screen shot), unreal.
i just dont understand why they even bother.
its just a true waste of electricity, tubes and airwaves lol
edit: the shadow line in the center white spectrum display was set to 5Khz to give a perspective

listening tonight 8/13/16 0426 LSB @ 3Khz bandpass, appear to be hearing only 3 stations, springfield armory and two others relaying noaa weather radio but that damn IBOC from WRCR is just taking everything out at times.

Not sure who this is, but they are off frequency by quite a bit, with a very obvious carrier.

after a few minutes of listening today at8/13/16 0426, i was finally able to pick out some audio on this.
its a spanish speaking OM.
just had to wait for the right time for 1380Khz to fade down and 1379.73Khz to fade up, listening in LSB @ 3Khz bandpass

Spy Numbers / Re: V15 recording

Kenneth, what is the frequency?

There's a popup box blocking it in the video...
seems to be somewhere between 3Mhz & 4Mhz after looking closely at both videos.
is there something special about V15 that the frequency is covered over intentionally but the V28 frequency isnt covered over at all in the other videos ?
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-4Xu0HjPlN9er6FqSWM5ww
they both operate within 3-4Mhz.
a through google search can yield the actual frequency anyway though it is subject to change randomly.

Decided to give 1710 a try in the morning. Some music (Spanish? So perhaps a pirate) mixing with a TIS station or three, barely heard under the horrific IBOC hash from WRCR, even using LSB mode. The USB of course is beyond horrible. No one even listens to AM stereo, all it does is destroy reception on adjacent channels.

One TIS station has a relay of a NOAA weather station from New England? So that's a DX catch of some sort.

this is a big reason why i often dont bother, because the TX for WRCR (even at night time power) is located in the path of reception for me so 1.710Mhz is out of the question, besides, even at certain points where its clear enough of the garbage from WRCR, the TIS stations destroy whatever is there anyway, its like fishing for a gold colored wild salmon at this point, i can hear the NOAA relay as well but i have to wonder, what is exactly the point to relay that on a TIS station ?
i know its slightly off topic but have you discovered any additional information about that carrier on 1.720Mhz ?
i too can see a slight carrier on the spectrum but thats about it, ive been recording 24 hours at a time on 1.720Mhz to see if this carrier ever comes up enough to present audio, it never happens.
it can also be seen on various online and remote SDR's so i wonder if it is some sort of very low power station operating there or just some sort of harmonic.

1.710Mhz is hopeless for the northeastern coast of the US thanks to WRCR.
maybe night time is slightly better due to WRCR operating at low power but still, it will be a difficult signal (IBOC) to overcome nevertheless for MW pirates.
even though the LSB IBOC is barely there when WRCR is at night time power, it can still be seen and heard on the SDR (i didnt know WRCR was using both IBOC carriers until now)

39
is that an actual carrier at 1.720Mhz or just a harmonic of some sort ?
i can see the USB IBOC from 1.700Mhz on 1.710 but what is on LSB at 1.710 ? it looks like another IBOC but weaker, that cant be from 1.700Mhz is it ?
i thought 1.700Mhz only had one IBOC, last i checked it did.

FM Free Radio / Re: Question on pirate radio
« on: July 28, 2016, 1714 UTC »
Thanks for your reply. I know it's not as common as it used to be, would just like to find one sometime ... as well as an FM pirate. I've only pulled in SW pirates so far, but that's still fun too.
new york city has a crap load of FM pirates though i havent heard any AM pirates there, many of the FM pirates in NYC really sound terrible, i guess they have not heard about professional sound processing/clipping/limiting/compression lol.
the really good pirates are the ones who appear, sound and operate like a commercial/public station, aside from checking the frequency licensing database, it can be difficult to distinguish whether theyre legit or not.
many pirates have irregular operating schedules as well, catching them on the air is akin to a game of "whack-a-mole", patience is key :)

i noticed the site index no longer "double loads" since its been SSL.
i presume the "double loading" in the past was due to ads loading on the page, i never really investigated it.

FM Free Radio / Re: Question on pirate radio
« on: July 28, 2016, 1620 UTC »
thats an interesting point actually, but i think the topic doesnt exist because there has not been much, if any AM pirates on for a long awhile.
this might be due to the fact that the antenna and transmitter requirements are a bit more difficult to achieve in an efficient realistic easy manner, because its where a large stake of financial interest is at, like FM radio (commerical stations dont like competition from free pirates) and also because there is a God-awful amount of those "travelers information stations" located between 1610 and 1710.
id be lucky to pick out any possible pirate at 1710khz through the multitude of multiple TIS stations and the stereo sub-carrier interference from a powerful NYS station at 1700khz.
perhaps Chris (ChrisSmolinski) may want to add a new forum topic "Free AM Radio", that would be up to him to decide though.

signed on at 0119 into Micheal Jackson "dont stop till you get enough" in FM, S5 signal
0121 switched to AM
0122 off mid song
edit - at 0118 there was a 1Khz tone in FM that slowly sweeped to 200Hz before 0119
0125 carrier for 15 seconds then off

so the squelch works but the squelch close time after receiving a transmission is slow ?
