General Radio Discussion / Pirate TV, Belize and the Cubs
« on: October 30, 2016, 0035 UTC »
Ran across an interesting story about the Chicago Cubs' popularity in Belize. All due to a pirate TV station.
Source: http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/the-strange-story-of-why-belize-is-full-of-chicago-cubs-fans

Quote from article:
"Why the Cubs—and why Belize? Like a lot of stories from this part of the world, it began with pirates. In this case, however, the outlaws were local TV impresarios, not swashbuckling Johnny Depp look-alikes. In the early ‘80s, there were no television stations in Belize, the only country in Central America whose official language is English. (Anyone with a set would use it to watch VHS tapes.) In 1981, however, Belize City business couple Arthur and Marie Hoare began transmitting the famous Chicago television channel WGN-TV via satellite, bringing programming to Belize. Channel 9, the Hoares' bootlegged Belize affiliate of WGN, brought Cubs and Bulls games into living rooms and bars throughout the country, sparking an interest in Chicago sports that has continued—with varying levels of enthusiasm—to this day."

Sad, Agree with Nella F. A sad way to go and 73 is just a bit to close for comfort.

Listening on 40 and 80 recently shows we need 'ol Riley back for an encore performance. I was just telling the XYL about what can be heard on the air now. She was appalled. (former novice that never upgraded)

Peaking S9 here in SE Fla. well above the S4-5 noise floor. As mentioned, great audio - opened up the filter to Hi = 5000.

Good find. That is KPH, recently back on the air. They are sending VVV and CQ de KPH. Not real strong here in SE Fla. ON 6477.5 tonight but able to copy with QSB.
See radiomaring.org (and subscribe to their newsletter if interested)

From the website:

KPH Returns Home!

The return of KPH to the airwaves on Saturday 8 October was a great success.  Senior KPH Morse operator Ray Smith sent the last message from Bolinas/Point Reyes on 30 July 1997.  He was there with us on Saturday to sit in his same operating position and send the message announcing the return of KPH to service.

KPH will be on the air every Saturday and Sunday so be sure to listen on our new frequencies:

4247.0
6477.5
8642.0
12808.5
17016.8
22477.5

Edit to add: They are much stronger here on 8642. Per the transmission they are on
4/6/8/12/16/22 this evening. I haven't checked the other frequencies yet.
Another edit: Only copy on 6/8/12, no copy on 4/17/22. Fits with the time of day. Still daylight out there.

Good signal here in SE Fla, not booming but a good 2-3 S units above the noise. Easy copy.
