Weather / Good and cheap wx station?

Emphasis on cheap. What wx gizmos do you use? Any cheap and reliable sets out there?

It turns out that many LTE carriers reuse the same keystream when two calls are made within a single radio connection. An attacker can then record an encrypted conversation, then immediately call the victim after that conversation. The attacker can now access the encrypted keystream, and as the keystream is identical to the first conversation, the first conversation can now be decoded.

Oft have been the times, usually at greyline, when hip hop/rap blared out from the glorious Buick speakers as I rolled (and I assure you they see me rolling, they hatin) along, expecting to hear nothing but powerhouse WHO on 1040, not rap. I finally got around to finding out where the wrap music came from and apparently a fm sta has an am component, an am hip hop/wrap music format. In Colorado.

 HF TDoA multilateration (1)
This blog post contains an analysis of TDoA multilateration applied to signal on 13413.4 kHz using a number of KiwiSDRs located in Europe.

For now the assumption used for making the KiwiSDR TDoA maps is that signals propagate with speed of light along the ground. Here we compare the measured delay differences with the ones obtained from this assumption.

All plots shown in this blog post are generated using octave/matlab .mat files available when using the updated KiwiSDR TDoA algorithm.

The cross-correlations for all combinations of used KiwiSDRs, normalized to have their maximum at unity, are shown below.

Amateur Radio / On the HAM bands
« on: March 20, 2020, 2251 UTC »
Started on 20m and clean band with a few strong sigs and some south American dx with a lot of strong sigs coming from  the western US. Moved to 17m and there were several dx stas, one from Caracas, then on to 15m. 15m had a lot of band noise for some reason, noise absent from the other bands, and there was dx under that noise, infuriatingly. Next tried 10m and a wp4 sta is calling cq on 28412 at 2250Z.

I feel this is an excellent price for the amount of protection.
Keep in mind they ground the antenna side center conductor with an inductance while a cap isolates the rig side center conductor and a gas discharge pill protects the works.

Shazam Style Automatic Signal Identification via the Sigidwiki Database

Thank you to José Carlos Rueda for submitting news about his work on converting a "Shazam"-like Python program made originally for song identification into a program that can be used to automatically identify radio signals based on their demodulated audio sounds. Shazam is a popular app for smartphones that can pull up the name of any song playing within seconds via the microphone. It works by using audio fingerprinting algorithms and a database of stored song fingerprints.

Using similar algorithm to Shazam, programmer Joseph Balikuddembe created an open source program called "audio_recogition_system" [sic] which was designed for creating your own audio fingerprint databases out of any mp3 files.

José then had the clever idea to take the database of signal sounds from sigidwiki.com, and create an identification database of signal sounds for audio_recogition_system. He writes that from his database the program can now identify up to 350 known signals from the sigidwiki database. His page contains the installation instructions and a link to download his premade database. The software can identify via audio that is input from the PC microphone/virtual audio cable or from a file.
