COSMOS 2454 in a secret Russian military spacecraft believed to be Parus navigation satellite for the Russian Defense Ministry. Parus satellites circle Earth in 620-mile-high (1,000-km-high) orbits over the poles. The new Parus spacecraft will likely be renamed Kosmos 2454 when it joins Russia's military satellite fleet.
https://www.n2yo.com/satellite/?s=35635

Description: A chain of five satellite receivers observes signals from the Russian Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. Two signals transmitted coherently at frequencies 150 MHz and 400 MHz are received and their phase difference is used to calculate the ionospheric electron density by means of statistical inversion. The results are shown in terms of electron density plots in a vertical plane above the receiver chain. In an ideal case the satellite flies along the chain. If this is not the case, the plot is a projection from regions outside the vertical plane. In order to estimate the validity of the results, check the satellite path in each case.

Just saw this and thought it a novel approach to suiting the antenna to day/nite conditions;
MW-antenna directional during the nighttime, omnidirectional in the daytime

Equipment / Loop On Ground
« on: May 26, 2017, 1859 UTC »
Just ran across this page that describes a small loop on the ground for hf reception;
http://www.kk5jy.net/LoG/

I have plans for workable hf underground antennas (apropos for this website) as the results from emp testing and have considered building same, but this antenna lying directly on the surface would be a lot easier to pull off; for the underground types one must remove the outer shield from coax and use the center conductor and dielectric for the antennae as well as burying the antenna - much more work than I want to do.

740 AM 0130Z 4/9/17 Doris Day singing Once I had a Secret Love followed by American Patrol and others I can't identify. Nice big band music from Big Band Sunday Night. Need a big black dial Zenith or Philco console to do this right, a Buick car radio isn't optimal.

1117Z (4:17pm local) 880AM WCBS loud and clear via Buick radio sitting in the work parking lot. Lol. I was kinda surprised at this one, it's about 820 miles distance and still hours of broad daylight left.
