General Radio Discussion / August Eclipse
« on: June 16, 2017, 1504 UTC »
August 21, 2017 is the day to be listening or recording vlf thru lower hf for unusual propagation. An eclipse can do funny things to propa.

Perhaps your Francophone stations will be French pirate HAMs.

Lol the local lectric sent out a flyer for free led bulbs mailed to your door, so I bit and tried them out. These things made enough hash to stop my scanner on just about every band. I had 3 of them going in a ceiling light and they made full quieting repeater sigs about half hash. Back in went the cfls, they don't make any noise unless you have the radio right next to them.

Air to Air Refueling/training on 343.25MHz 1530Z 14Jun17, my guess is track 455/315 near TN/KY border.

SENTRY 51 (E-3B 964th AACS/ 552nd ACW Tinker AFB, OK) with HAPPY 06 (HAPPY KC-135R 126th ARW/108ARS, IL ANG Scott AFB/Mid-America IL) and others. IDs are tentative due to old ears and low signal strengths at times as well as pilots and gas passers swallowing their mics.

51; 06 Level off at 200 and we'll call overrun and overtake you.

06; 51 will you do some s turns to slow down for us.

(51 has mistaken 06 for another ac in the area)

Equipment / Re: Low Band Antennae
« on: June 14, 2017, 1536 UTC »
See that's kinda what I was thinking, use a cb whip and be done with it.
A beam as boombox mentions would be nice but more cost and work than I want, just have to find a cheap 1/4w. A beam would open and close the band but I want something simple and omni, the opposite of a beam. Used to have a Francis Antenna model Wheeler Dealer, a fibreglass 1/4w stick that had 3 quarter waves fed in phase bundled inside the fibreglass, same diameter as a standard cb whip, had grossly increased lower angle of radiation over a 1/4w stick in the same mounting point. We mounted the a standard stainless whip and set the fs meter to full scale a few wavelengths away, then mounted the wheeler, the wheeler resulted in a few times more low angle rf power at the same distance and rf power out, blew us away. Sadly they don't make it anymore.

Air to Air Refueling/training on 336.100MHz 2300Z 13Jun17

Tail number(?) 0194 aka 61 tells RINO 50 there will be 3 different people in the seat, so apparently 3 different pilots in the same AC will be contacting the tanker for AAR training, or maybe I got it wrong and there will be 3 different  "gas passer" boom operators in training. Mentions meeting up near Pocket City. Also other AC training as well.

61; 50, 61
Tanker RINO 50; 61 clear to contact
61; contact
Tanker RINO 50; contact and up 4 please
61; up 4
Tanker RINO 50; up 4 please
61; up

Tanker RINO 50; tanker's coming right

Tanker RINO 50; did you punch off or did I do that?
61; I did it for retry

61; wait one, changing seats

Raven; 50, Raven, clear to contact?
Tanker RINO 50;clear to contact

Boom op asks 61 about a certain pilot, is told the pilot was killed by a stoned driver who hit him when he was changing a tire on the highway. OU has a scholarship or something in his name.

Equipment / Low Band Antennae

What do you guys use for low band? Say 25 to 88MHz? Also apparently the eskip is rolling from the midwest to Montana to south of Mehico right now.

What about enforcing the Part 15 rules for the crappy electronics that are polluting the RF spectrum?

If they stop by my place, they can find a bunch of different things interfering across VLF-HF. Then we can go for a short drive to find a whole pile more.  Its super easy... if they want to enforce the emissions from the electronics junk. Maybe they don't want to.

This would hit China and thusly wall street in the hip pocket.
