My first 2m 1/4 wave vert was made with coat hangers and a uhf socket, worked fine. People underestimate the ubiquitous coat hanger.

Also cheap "pegs" that can be left in the ground indefinitely or at least till they rust away is to cut up a coat hanger (NO MORE WIRE HANGERS!) into sections and make them into U shapes, press them into the dirt over the wire and the wire will keep in place even when mowed over.

If you watch the vid I posted the url to, it shows him hanging from a phone cord around his neck kinda like how he killed himself, as well as singing the lyrics;

                               "The Day I Tried To Live"

I woke the same as any other day
Except a voice was in my head
It said seize the day, pull the trigger, drop the blade
And watch the rolling heads

The day I tried to live
I stole a thousand beggar's change
And gave it to the rich
The day I tried to win
I dangled from the power lines
And let the martyrs stretch
Singing

One more time around
Might do it
One more time around
Might make it
One more time around
Might do it
One more time around
The day I tried to live

The part about pulling the trigger might signify suicide, while the part about one more time around might signify a belief in reincarnation. But who knows, can't ask him now.

Redhat, as I told a revolutionary type I knew decades ago; do you know what a revolution in a superpower such as the United States would entail? We're not talking about simply civilians taking up arms, but factions of the military with it's arsenals being unleashed in a total war driven by competing ideologies. That means nukes, chemical, and biological weapons very likely being used wholesale within our own borders. There wouldn't be a blade of grass worth eating after such a conflict and it would take decades, if not centuries for anything resembling functioning society to reemerge.

If you want to change the system, you have to participate in the system, you can't stand on the sidelines, observe, and complain or simply walk away. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but radical, sudden change is always a violent and murderous affair that does no one any good.

There's also the outside influences to such activities. Don't think Russia or China or even Canada and countries in south America would sit idle as we tear ourselves apart. That being said, a great great uncle, who happened to be the only president of the Confederacy, said if there's to ever be another civil war, let them start it.

I had hopes that you'd enjoy that little tweak to pirate radio.

What does it cost to run a SWBC station like Radio Australia?

The comments below the article are enlightening. A guy there keeps telling naysayers that the new technologies to replace R Australia's service to the outback are cheap, readily available, and the best way to go.

Right on. Just wire the entire area N and W of Dubbo with cell service or WiFi. Can't see how that wouldn't cost much. I'm sure the facilities would be cheap, and then the electric power to cover the entire area? Even cheaper.  ::)

My guess is their current governments are just going to let them stay in the informational dark.

A valid question, however is the target audience hard pressed to find batteries for their portable swl sets in the outback, or do they all carry iphones? Some listeners may not have the funds to afford simple diode rectification, let alone 5th gen wifi.

"I would guess if it's buried it needs to have a waterproof dielectric?"
Yes, so foamed dielectric is a poor choice for this use.

As to loops over Beverages and etc, I was thinking more along the lines of a rhombic but am not sure how the directivity will approximate that of a full size rhombic - wich is the goal.

If you're interested in antennae and radio at all you need to read this at least once;

Just ran across this page that describes a small loop on the ground for hf reception;
http://www.kk5jy.net/LoG/

I have plans for workable hf underground antennas (apropos for this website) as the results from emp testing and have considered building same, but this antenna lying directly on the surface would be a lot easier to pull off; for the underground types one must remove the outer shield from coax and use the center conductor and dielectric for the antennae as well as burying the antenna - much more work than I want to do.
