Hi Jasmine! When you hear AFA Alpha Foxtrot Alpha in a presumed MARS call, that would indicate USAF, US Army MARS will be Alpha Alpha Romeo, AAR. USN/MC MARS no longer exists as you note. It's common to find USAF and Army MARS members in each others nets too. I helped with traffic to/from Nebraska USN/MC MARS when I was in Iowa USN/MC MARS as I was on the west coast of Iowa, otherwise comms outside your region was pretty much verboten.

For the woosh sound, try psk 110A mode in Sorcerer, 8N1 framing, sync or async can't recall so try both.
The good news is 110A does autobaud and autosync.
The headers will mostly be in plain text, some traffic will be offline encrypted via this app;

following these protocols;

Set up one of your verts and see how it plays. Your greyline will be an hour or so before sunrise to an hour or a bit more after, same for sunset.

I had a sloper (vertical polarised) heading east and a horizontal firing east and west, often, especially at fade in/fade out one would often far outperform the other, to the point of the signal being unheard on one but good on the other until it was completely gone for the day.

The further a tx is from the rx (as in near-antipodal work), the lower the angle of arrival of their sigs, so having something that responds well to low angle of arrival, ie a vertical, is a great help.

06 tells 21 we're completing our first orbit, do you need more time?

Depending on the current draw, I'd be interested in running it on a battery, right at the antenna, with a small solar panel to charge with.

Murphy B40.B demonstration on youtube, nice solid sound to  the band switch mechanism at minute 1:57 .....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGcwn6snjmg

That clunck lets you know your contacts are now clean.

In Omaha and surrounding area the ground conductivity is some of the best in the US, and I noted that ambc sigs were very stable as far as daytime sigs went. Moved to Indiana and here the local sigs are all over the place, sometimes even within the day.

look at that crap, went from a glorious 30 to a lousy 8

The best part is when things are great, sigs are strong and steady, and then they're gone, like someone flipped a switch.

It'd be interesting to compare ground conductivity at tx and rx sites, with respect towards rainfall or lack of. There's a bcaster here that most days is over 80dBm steady but sometimes falls drastically. I feel this may be ground conductivity related as when the sigs low, we've gone without rain for a period.
