General Radio Discussion / Radio Stand Hack
« on: July 18, 2019, 1438 UTC »

After breaking enough cheap Tecsun plastic radio flip up "stands", sending to China for more, and breaking those; I thought I'd give a go at devising one.  I took a spinach container with a lip, cut it on a 45 degree angle.  I notched the upper left hand corner where the antenna would lie.  Voila, radio stand.

Huh? / Jim Bouton Passes
« on: July 11, 2019, 0005 UTC »
Former New York Yankee Pitcher Jim Bouton passed away at age 80 on July 10, 2019.  Besides being known as a World Series winning pitcher and losing his cap when he threw, Bouton became infamous for authoring baseball's first tell-all  book, "Ball Four", in 1970.

In making a long story short, my parents had crossed paths with Mr. Bouton in a chance meeting at a restaurant.  Bouton eventually afforded my late mother the opportunity to write the lyrics for the theme song of his upcoming TV series by the same name as the book. (She was a high school grad that read a lot so she wrote well, Norman Mailer kept up correspondence with her.) Her amateur efforts were not the lyrics selected.  The TV series aired for two months before it was dropped.

In front of me, I have my mother's personally  addressed autographed copy of "Ball Four".  The book ends with one of the greatest lines ever set to print "You see, you spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time."

General Radio Discussion / Brother Stair off the air?
« on: June 26, 2019, 2235 UTC »

While listening to Allan Weiner Worldwide on 9330 at 2230 utc on 26 Jun 2019, Allan mentioned that he learned that Brother Stair is completely off the air on all radio stations while he deals with other "problems".  He did not know the future status of his programs but would try to be in touch with him.  Allan mentioned that upcoming Overcomer Ministries will be from the archives.

Good Reception. Live coverage of Final 16 Women's World Cup match between England and Cameroon, sorry no play by play blogging - I don't know players well enough.  If someone can explain to me why a team with a losing record in pool play advances to knockout stage, I'd appreciate (too few teams and too much money?) but I digress....

1558 IS chimes
1559 Immediately into joined in action play by play of match by 2YL
1600 No top hour break for news or Sportworld ID
1607 Deep fades in reception now
1617 England scores in extra time, goal reversed on offside.  Video being checked.  Offside overturn, goal counts - England 2 - Cameroon 0.

Surprisingly good reception using PL-880 with its wire on the back porch as transmission emanates from Kimjae.  Sounds like occasional attempts to jam this Korean language broadcast.

1532 YL and OM in discussion in Korean
1552 Conversation has continued straight through with the word "Korea" mentioned several times.  Attempts at jamming have quelled.
