General Radio Discussion / question about ham radio
« on: April 23, 2017, 2025 UTC »
I live in ontario Canada, and I'm wondering why I can hear all these euro-hams, but can't hear the stations they are talking to in usa/canada ?

example just now:

Equipment / Mini Whip
« on: March 26, 2017, 1959 UTC »
today i experimented and wrapped about 25 feet of wire around the top railing of my balcony, spaced about 3 inches apart each wrap. I then connected one end to the bnc connection going into the whip which would be the outer coax. the signals are now excellent and the noise level dropped to about S2.
is this wire acting like a "ground" kind of, or is the wire being the main antenna instead of the whip ?

i wonder if anybody has the same problem as I do, it happens in the morning, and at sunset. it starts off as the big blobs, then goes away after an hour or so! Maybe those street lights, but i'm far away from them. I live in apartment building, so it could be anything.

General Radio Discussion / Pot lights give ham radio operators a buzz
« on: February 28, 2017, 1021 UTC »

AUGUSTA, Maine – Ham radio operators say their frequencies are increasingly getting a harsh buzz from a component of the indoor lamps used to grow pot.

The American Radio Relay League has been filing complaints with the Federal Communications Commission over the past several years and wants federal regulators to halt the marketing and sale of illegal grow light ballasts.

Ballasts regulate electrical currents in lights and can disrupt radio frequencies. But ham radio operators say decriminalization of marijuana in states like Colorado has led to more large high-power grow lights in residential areas.

In Maine, retired Coast Guard officer Roger Johnson claims his amateur radio has twice been disrupted by nearby marijuana growers. He wants the state to step in, but other ham radio operators say the federal government should do its job.

I wonder if a Ham Radio "logging" board would be of interest to others.

I have one of these 40M mobile whips that was in the garage for 10 years that I never really tried/used, and thought I'd give it a shot. It actually works good with my SDRPlay. Have it on 3rd story balcony apartment.
