SDR - Software Defined Radio / KiWiSDR fan problem
« on: July 17, 2019, 1457 UTC »
Late last year I bought a KiWiSDR and also ordered the metal case. The case included a small (5 vdc, ~30mm box type) fan.
After just a few months, the fan became very noisy. I removed it, cleaned it (nothing like sharing a house with a long haired cat
even thought the SDR is up on a desktop), and even carefully peeled back the label and lightly oiled the fan bearing. That
helped for a short while and now the noise is back.

Has anyone else run into this and how did you fix it? I e-mailed seeedco asking about getting a replacement and also a spare;
I have not received a response as of this morning.
Thankis

~0255 I walked in just in time to see an AM sig on 6900
I clicked on it and caught a few words by a YL
then SSTV, which did not decode, then it was gone.
The sig was a good S9+ but not full modulation.

Did anyone else hear this one? Chris, got it recorded???

1705 - Caught just the end of a Christmas jingle, then it was gone.
Not a bad signal but nothing to write home about. Sorry
I didn't hear more. Thanks, whoever you were. :)

Ooops, corrected date

Sorry I didn't take some notes as to exact time but I was sitting
here otherwise involved and became aware of very weak CW. I
looked up at the monitor and could see the CW while tuned to
6925 USB. I popped up fldigi and switched to CW-U and here is
the "text" that fldigi copied. To me, it looks like a parody of a bulletin
xmission. I can just pick out a few words and word fragments here
and there starting with what seems to be a story about a snowman
with a black face and a carrot nose... ???

I am posting this under Pirates since it doesn't seem to be
a "legit" signal.

No, I didn't verify it with the R-70 to make sure it wasn't an image
or something. Did Chris or anybody catch this on a recording? I
hope someone can shed some light on this.

General Radio Discussion / Early radar systems
« on: November 25, 2018, 2057 UTC »
Long, long ago, when I was but a wee pup of a tech, one of our senior engineers had some of these hanging on his office wall. I thought they were cool but had not thought of them again until the other night when I was watching a PBS program about the SR-71 Blackbird and The Skunk Works. For some reason, that triggered a flash back and I did a Google search – even remembered they were ads for Varian Associates – and found that someone(s) has saved them on the internet.

~1905 heard some unk mx. Seemed to be a fairly good sig but
shutdown / soff about as soon as I tuned in. No, of course I
wasn't recording at the time - what a silly question! :)

When all the squirrels, possums, deer, and such are running up and down the hiways and byways

HF Mystery Signals / Odd sig ~6920 - 6970 kHz, ~1210 - 1230 05oct UTC
« on: October 06, 2018, 0140 UTC »
I noticed this sig while having coffee this morning. I don't recall seeing anything similar before. I don't know how long it had been on before I saw it and it wandered around a bit - seemed random to me. Anyone have any ideas as to what it was?

On a totally different note and very short notice --- Is anyone else from the middle TN / central KY area planning to go to the Vettte City (Bowling Green) hamfest tomorrow morning? It's at a new venue this year - on the campus of WKY University. It's just a quick run up I-65 for me. I'll probably be wearing my "Official RF Whatever Bunker" t-shirt 8)

Drat!!! I don't see a place to include attachments anymore??? Sorry, no image...

Latest - with MUCH thanks to all! - let's see what this does...

AMAZING!!!! Thanks to MDK2 for pointing me in the right direction but I still had to do some digging. I thought that after way too many years in computer systems and networks I could do anything - very humbling. :)

Thanks to my friend Donald for calling this to my attention.
Enjoy a trip in the "way-back machine" :)

Pretty weak here and with much QSB
1749 - Bluegrass version of "She once was a truelove of mine"
(can't remember correct name but something like
"Girl of the???") edit - "Girl of the Lowlands"???
Arrgh! I may be old but I'm slow :) That was "Scarborough Fair"
1754 - more BG mx
1803 - "Big Ball in Town"
1810 - Faded out or s/off

Thanks for the show and keep up that fine BG mx!

I guess many others got this but for my good friend "Justin Case" you missed it, here 'tiz. Starts in ~8+/- minutes...

Radio Casablanca expects to be on the air this evening from a secret location in the deserts of Morocco.

The frequency will be 6940 kHz, with 6950 and 6960 as alternate choices in case of Nazi jamming.

Look for us to start around 0015-0030 UTC.

Be well!

0409 - Unkn mx noise :) Looks to have a good carrier but
very low modulation. Station has been on for a while
but I didn't see anyone else reporting it.
I'll give it an SIO of 242

0413 - Sig and modulation improved enough to assure me
this is definitely not my kind of "mx"! Much QSB
but still mostly near noise floor.

0418 - No carrier. Gone???

28
1330 - Unk mx. Sig has been on for a while but too weak to
make out anything. It's barely above the noise floor.
           SIO ~151

edit - Hey, Chris, thanks for the ID!

Much QSB but mostly almost too low to make out
mx. Interesting that last Sat nite, at WSWLfest,
I also heard someone on this freq playing old
Hank Williams mx; I was listening on my Tecsun PL-680
and the signal was booming in, up there.

0125 - "Sister Golden Hair", America
0129 - "Muddy Water"
0133 - "I'm Not in Love"
0139 - Now beginning to attract attention
from hams. I corrected the 0125 song
title; was a string of mx by America.

Equipment / Using SDR for Site Noise Survey
« on: February 22, 2018, 1350 UTC »
This was sent to me and I thought I'd pass it along.
Makes for interesting reading.
Thought you might enjoy the articles. Part 1 and Part 2.
Makes for an interesting approach to using the SDR Play
receiver and HDSDR software.
