FM Free Radio / Part 15 FM from neighbor with a blingged out yard for Christmas.

A mile away, a neighbor of mine use to put up a u-FM station with X-mas tunage to accompany his totally holiday blingged out decorated yard. He's even got a lit sign that says "101.3FM". This year, that station now reaches 1/4 of a mile and is in stereo. Before, it maybe reached a two yards away. And last year, he didn't have it on. Anyone else come across X-mas decorated yard stations?

On the drive to work, noticed the 11M CB band opened with Sporadic E to the Mid-West. Checking out LSB38, several stations from Iowa and especially Texas. Some hitting 7lbs. I don't have 10M in the truck, but I'll bet that 28.400MHz was dead.

General Radio Discussion / It's the second week of deer camp... Time to monitor!

Uh-huh, tis that time of year in much of the USA for deer season. In the 1970's, 80's, and most of the 90's, you heard hunters on CB portables, especially CH 14. Some of those portables reached over 10 miles! A friend of mine in NW Pennsyl-tucky, (Not Pennsylvania. If you've been there, then you'll know what I mean.), used a 40CH full powered CB portable in his drive and was still able to QSO to me some 20 miles away with it. Come to the 1990's and now. FRS / GMRS UHF portables are now the norm. With foliage to a minimum and hunters on hilltops, you can hear these folks for miles as well. Fun to listen to these dudes. They would whisper to each other, "There he is, there he is! I'm going to try and take my shot." Then, that's the cue when, (Not me, but someone closely resembling me.), would key up and yell, "BANG!!!!!!" Then, the next thing you'd hear on the radio is, "What the hell was that?!?!" Anyway, you get the idea. It's something else to monitor. Hi-hi......

Interesting to find this coming in at that hour where I am, peaking out at S2, but a nice quite noise floor. The program was about a New Zealand prospective on 50 years of the Woodstock festival, with various audio clips from the fest, and what it was like to see Woodstock: The Movie in NZ in the theatres in 1970.

Equipment / A possible 2.4GHz STL use from Retekess? Maybe...

Radio Jay was doing a review on another portable DSP radio, with so-so performance, but what caught my attention was the company name of the product he reviewed, Retekess. Well, I've never heard of them. A quick search of their product line show some interesting FM transmitters, (None of which are legal in the USA.), and this 2.4GHz audio TX / RX,   https://www.retekess.com/categories/Audio-Monitor-System
A potential STL??? What I don't like is it's yet another appliance on 2.4GHz that may have a potential to mess with wi-fi. Still, intriguing.

Propagation / HF sucks??? Try VHF / UHF this heat wave!

Today, starts a big Fall heatwave in the USA Northeast, and already I've noticed some nice VHF / UHF enhancement from Temperature Inversions late at night and early morning. Last night, about 2AM, the Athens, OH NOAA WX station on 162.550MHz was 1/2 scale on an HT I checked it on. (Normally, barely there at around 100 miles from me.) This morning, S9! That, and local FM Translators were getting covered over by out of area FM stations. So, when it reaches +90 degrees in the day, and night dips down to the lower 60's, that temperature swing could mean some nice propagation on the FM, TV, MURS, GMRS, Marine, EMS, Weather, Amateur Radio,  whatever's on the VHF / UHF bands. (Even 6M could be game.)  Don't forget to check for those propagational beacons on 2M, 222MHz, and 432MHz, in CW mode. So, while the lower HF bands are still too noisy, and the upper HF bands still suck, those VHF / UHF bands should be game! Will we see the conditions of late September 2004? That would be nice.

Kindda' too bad, could have been the last possibilities for, not just raping for minerals, but tourism, ultimate winter sports, radio super quiet telescope station locations, and starting up radio stations. Hey, can't be any worst that Alaska, where the FCC up there has a ravage reputation of going gung-ho onto practically anything reported to be unlicensed up there.
