David counts himself among the shortwave dial twisters. While no one knows the exact number of shortwave listeners in the United States, most estimates place the number in the millions.
SWL’s range from teenagers to retired persons to David Letterman (CBS Comedian and star of The Late Show) who has mentioned several occasions how much he enjoys listening to shortwave, particularly broadcasts by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) - On the Late Late ShowNovember 1995 with Tom Snyder, Letterman in an interview expressed his fascination for
his hobby short wave radio listening.
David Letterman and Hal Gurnee, director and supervising producer of the Late Show, share an interest in old-time radio, especially the old programs. Letterman is a frequent shortwave
listener as well. Both he and Gurnee have LOWE HF-150 receivers. (models made in England) partially scripted from Intro to Shortwave Listening & Wikipedia. ...http://www.oldqslcards.com/Letterman.pdf

PBY5-5A aircraft used ASV radar, information source is Pacfic War On-Line Encyclopedia...http://pwencycl.kgbudge.com/P/b/PBY_Catalina.htm

A quick summary of British ASV radars  .....A notable improvement was achieved with what called Long Range ASV. LRASV was based on the second antenna configuration developed. It was a sideways-looking system. The transmitter was an array of ten dipoles, installed in five (later reduced to four) pairs on top of the fuselage of the aircraft. The receiving antennas were Sterba arrays, fitted to the sides of the fuselage. Because the transmitter array was a dipole array 18 feet long and the two receivers were arrays 12 feet long, a much better resolution and range could be achieved. The first installation was on a Whitley bomber, in late 1939. LRASV had a range 2.5 times better than the forward-looking system; it could detect submarines at 10 to 15 miles.... source of information is...https://uboat.net/allies/technical/uk_radars.htm

Token, the summary states...ASV Mk.II  Developed at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough in early 1940, ASV Mk.II differed from Mk.I mainly because it was properly engineered, and therefore much more reliable. Although called a 1.5m radar, it actually used 1.7m (176MHz). Range was up to 36 miles. :)

Based upon my personal experience traveling on the QEW/403 from Niagara Falls to the Greater Toronto Area is like witnessing "The Lemmings to the Sea" suicide myth. The tow truck drivers wait by the roadside for the crash victims.

On June 15, Toronto police Const. Ronald Joseph was arrested and charged in relation to the theft of one of the radios.

Joseph, who is currently suspended with pay, owned two tow trucks and a car rental agency.

Police allege Joseph received kickbacks from a network of tow truck drivers for the provision of stolen police radios, and got referrals to his car rental agency from people involved in collisions.

Police were always aware of Joseph’s car rental agency but did not know he owned two tow trucks. ......https://www.cp24.com/news/toronto-cop-deeply-involved-in-tow-truck-corruption-ring-police-1.4994559
