Longwave Loggings / unid 305
« on: November 27, 2019, 0145 UTC »
Heard a Canadian with a rather longish DAID just before midnight GMT (11-26)
on 305.  Could not get a solid ID but the last letter was "T".
Conditions seem rather quiet tonight for a change.

Longwave Loggings / mini-DXpedition
« on: November 08, 2019, 2120 UTC »
Presently thawing out here in the shack after my return from a QRM-free local park in an attempt to escape the S9+ noise in the neighborhood.
Took along a PL-600 portable and hastily strung up a wire antenna through the rafters of a picnic shelter.
The results were so-so, need to come up with some sort of tuner for the antenna as there were a number of signals present that were just too
weak to positively ID.  Anyway, the radio seemed pretty sensitive for a portable although the selectivity wasn't that great.

The best DX was Thunder Bay @ 500 mi... pretty good for midday LW.
The DAID on the Canadian beacons is a big help in detecting a signal.
Still cold soaked... gonna head for the kitchen and warm up with some Tim Hortons coffee, eh.

MW Loggings / WPBS AM 1040
« on: October 29, 2019, 1913 UTC »
WHO Des Moines IA is the top gun on 1040 but was able to null them out
this morning and pill in WPBS out of Conyers GA with a weak but readable signal.
Format sounded Asian, perhaps Vietnamese.

CKNT AM 960 Mississauga ON "Sauga 960" 7-14-19 @ 0115Z
first time logging this station... relatively new station on the air,
in and out with WFIR AM 960 Roanoke VA,
the VA station eventually dominating the frequency

MW Loggings / WNAX AM 570
« on: April 27, 2019, 1440 UTC »
Been looking for WNAX AM 570 Yankton SD for a while.  The 570 spot on the dial is usually dominated here by WKBN
in Youngstown OH.  However, early this morning from 1000 - 1030Z, WNAX managed to override the Ohio station at times.
WNAX runs 5kw day and night but the nighttime pattern is to the north somewhat away from me so was lucky to hear them.

MW Loggings / KMOX St. Louis MO
« on: March 14, 2019, 1727 UTC »
KMOX 1120 AM St. Louis MO, big signal in here this morning on the car radio 0900 local (EST),
sounded like a local.  The path would have been all daylight.

MW Loggings / DXing with a Xtal set
« on: March 02, 2019, 0323 UTC »
AM BCB conditions have been rather unsettled here in Michigan the past couple of evenings but
anyway got out my xtal set last evening around 2100 EST.
As expected, results were not too good... lots of QSB.  However, did manage to
positively ID several stations as they faded in and out:

WHAM-AM 1180  Rochester  NY
faded in just enough to get the ID, "Wham news radio 11-80"
then gone

KDKA-AM  1020  Pittsburg  PA
talking about the Pittsburg Home and Garden Show

WLW-AM  700  Cincinnati  OH
could hear it in and out under local powerhouse WJR 760
(remember this is a xtal set, selectivity isn't the greatest)

WBZ-AM  1030  Boston  MA
"Nightside" program with host Dan Rea
this station, unlike the others, had a solid signal in here all evening

KRND  AM  1630  Cheyenne  WY  "La Jota Mexicana"  SS music format with fair sigs
This freq usually belongs to KCJJ in here but the Iowa station was nowhere to be heard.

2-23-19  1130Z
WTNI  AM  1640  Biloxi  MS  "The Champ"  ESPN sports talker with nice sigs
Interview with flamboyant former University of Detroit and Detroit Pistons
head coach Dick Vitale.

MW Loggings / WCRN AM 830
« on: February 11, 2019, 2146 UTC »
WCRN AM 830 Worcester MA playing an Oldies format...  never logged this one here in Michigan before last night @ 0305Z.
The 830 spot is usually dominated here by 50kw WCCO Minneapolis MN.  However, last night
WCRN was completely covering WCCO (albeit, there were several deep fades during which the
MN station could be faintly heard).  WCRN is also 50kw but what makes the strong reception here so
unusual is that their nighttime pattern mostly warms up the Atlantic Ocean being beamed directly from me.
Anyway, enjoyed listening to the Oldies for about an hour.

MW Loggings / 710 AM WFNR
« on: January 05, 2019, 0038 UTC »
Was tuned to 710 this morning after sunrise and noticed an Oldies format station under WOR.  Never heard that before so listened for a while.
The sigs got considerably louder about 2 hrs after their sunrise (propagation or Critical Hours idk) but eventually faded out as the sun got higher.
Anyway, my guess is that it may be WFNR Blacksburg VA. a 10kw daytimer with a pattern aimed my way.   They may have flipped their format from News / Talk to Oldies.
Never caught an air check or ID.  The production sounds automated.  Anybody else hearing this one ?

Longwave Loggings / propagation anomaly
« on: December 16, 2018, 1546 UTC »
Past couple of mornings (Saturday and Sunday) have noticed an almost total lack of signals between about 240 and the bottom end of the DGPS band.
Almost no noise but almost no sigs either... an RF desert.
OTOH, some good DX 200 - 220 and good conditions above 326.  Strange
Anyone else have a similar experience ?
