MW Loggings / Re: Anyone Else Have Signals Down, Noise Up ?
« on: July 03, 2021, 1512 UTC »
For whatever reason, very much improved MW band conditions here in MI early this morning.
Chicago flamethrowers WGN and WLS both back full blast. 740 Zoomer CFZM loud and clear sounding like a local
as were X-banders 1630 KCJJ and 1640 WSJP.  550 WGR was pouring in from across the Lake with a big signal.
Also got in some nice LW listening with only a random static crash here and there.

Weather / rain
« on: June 26, 2021, 0902 UTC »
Four inches of rain yesterday (Friday 6-25-21), 3 inches of which fell last evening in a 1 1/2 hour period resulting in some minor neighborhood street flooding.
Presently raining this morning with more on the way throughout the day into tonight and more tomorrow.
Looks like we get to make up for the relatively dry Spring and Summer so far all in a few days.

NQC,

Daytime AM DX is the true test of how good a receiver you may have.
Even a pocket transistor can pick up stations 1000 miles out at night.

Treehouse,

Not a bad idea to do an AM bandscan every now and then just to keep track of conditions
or stumble upon a new one that might appear (or old one that disappears).
You will also occasionally luck on to a new one underneath a local.

NQC,

Too busy here working on the cars during the summer... when you drive old junk that's how it goes (or doesn't).
Generally start stocking up on electronic odds and ends about September in anticipation of the long winter nights in the shack.

"After May 1 most broadcast band DXers reluctantly desert the dials.
Long hours of daylight and tremendously increased static make distant reception
just plain miserable."

Conditions still poor today... probably why we don't AM BCB DX during the Summer.

WLW and Zoomer usually with fair daytime sigs in here both weak and barely readable this morning.  Also, normally strong Chicago powerhouses WGN and WLS both not heard.
Can't be due to local QRM as my listening was done at a noise free local park.
The K-Index has been mostly low recently and the Dst near zero, however, lots of T-storm activity in the Midwest, Gulf Coast, and off the Carolinas.
My guess is that the poor conditions lately are mostly typical Summertime QRN.

The car radio is grounded to the frame in a negative ground automotive system, so even a wire with an alligator clip to the frame somewhere probably would suffice for a ground radial.

That would probably help if your car is parked.  My concern was how to ground a vehicle in motion.  :-\

Weather / eclipse this morning
« on: June 10, 2021, 1129 UTC »
Although the sky was mostly clear, it seemed darker than usual before sunrise this morning maybe due to the sun rising in solar eclipse.
A dense fog rolled in at sunrise which could be a good thing as it will prevent the uninformed from trying to view the eclipse without proper safety equipment.

x2 on the grounding,  although somewhat impractical on a car radio
However, if you are taking along a portable on a mini-DXpedition, consider a provision for grounding.
It will greatly improve performance on LW and MW.

JF,

tnx for the update.

UMP and DE were the only U.S. beacons ever copied here on 338
so with both of those now gone maybe will hear something new.
