Equipment / Re: ICOM ICR-75 vs. TECSUN S-2000

The ham bands can be very crowded on a big contest weekend which we seem to have a lot of this time of year.
Even in the evening after dinner 80 and 40 start to load up.

MW at night here in the States you need all the selectivity you can get.  Otherwise an adjacent clear channel 50kw
blowtorch will walk all over you.

The 2000 will be OK with most any wire antenna if you live far enough away from a
powerful AM broadcast band station.
Just don't try an active antenna or amplified loop... it WILL overload.

The use of D batteries is nice.  My 750 (version of the 2000) gets used most every night always on battery.
The current set of D cells were replaced in May and still show full on the display... usually get at least a year
out of them.

My 750 is my go to radio for casual listening...  easy to use, no menus, direct pushbutton entry.

As a former journalist who was a stickler for facts (I'm now in PR, where facts are fuzzier  :)), I did indeed log it as Illinois.

Thanks for the tip on 810 kHz; I've tried a little to null KGO, but that signal's a blowtorch even up here north of Seattle!

WHB will go to full power 50kw omnidirectional at their sunrise when the path will still be mostly dark towards you.
If you can null KGO enough you may be able to hear WHB underneath.
You will have until the 50kw daytimer KTBI in WA signs on.

Propagation has been good to the west lately for some reason.

ND is a tough catch here, KQWB is the only ND AM in my logbook.

Propagation / Re: Ducting on LW/MW/SW and Spotlight Propagation
« on: November 14, 2020, 1925 UTC »
OK, so this morning the LW propagation was rather bland, mostly the usual stronger not too distant Canadians.
However, three Florida beacons: PKZ, FIS, and JA all had rather good signals in here to Michigan.  Nothing else heard in between other than one Ohio beacon.
The only odd ones were 329 YEK Eskimo Point NU and 334 YER Fort Severn ON at 1000+ miles in the almost exact opposite direction both with a big signal.

Weather / bye bye warm weather
« on: November 14, 2020, 0002 UTC »
Last week at this time we were enjoying dining outdoors in the middle of an unusual warm period for November for Michigan
with daytime temperatures reaching into the mid-70s.  Tonight things are back to normal for this time of year.
We are dining indoors, temperature outside in the upper 30s with a cold west wind.

A purist would call it Illinois, but hey, it's a hobby.   ;)

If you really want Missouri, try 810 WHB Kansas City...  don't worry, it's on the Missouri side of the river.
You will have to null KGO.

QG very weak yesterday (11-8-20), not hearing it this morning.

Also, FWIW, 375  7B  St. Thomas  ON  not heard here for the past
month or so... don't see it on the decommissioning list although
IIRC Canadian number prefix beacons may be private owned.

Heard DIW here in MI yesterday morning (11-8-20) with a fair signal but not hearing it today.
K- index is 0, but low end of beacon band seems dead.

The 750 version of the 2000 became available again this summer, but at 400 USD is overpriced.
A nice radio for the casual DXer with plenty of sensitivity (be careful not to overload it) and
good audio but selectivity is not so great even in "narrow" mode.  On a crowded ham band the
radio just can't get out of its own way as signals pour in on top of each other.
That said, it is still my favorite portable by a large margin.

Didn't listen too long but heard them this morning in Michigan with fair sigs and
some sweep tones at about 0950Z and a YL with TOH ID at 1000Z.

Propagation / Re: Ducting on LW/MW/SW and Spotlight Propagation
« on: October 31, 2020, 2311 UTC »
Interesting stuff although some of it is beyond my level.

Radio textbooks discuss LW propagation in terms of groundwave and mention ducting only in the VHF/UHF realm.
Based on my years of LW listening, there are 15 or so beacons (the number was easily twice that as little as three years ago but decommissioning has taken its toll)
that can be heard at my location with rather rudimentary receiving equipment most any time regardless the weather, atmospherics, or time of day.
The practical limit seems to be about 300 miles.  So, OK, these are probably groundwave signals.  However, what is the explanation for the nighttime DX ?
Most likely skywave would be my guess.  However, there has been a noticeable feature of the nighttime DX that has me curious.  Oftentimes, the nighttime
propagation is only so-so in every direction except for signals booming in in droves from a particular direction.  One night it could be northern Quebec and the
next night Manitoba, or Florida, or wherever.  This seems to fit the ducting model.

Anyway, just goes to show that maybe we have not yet got this propagation thing all figured out.

edit:
For example, this morning LW propagation was unremarkable.  Only the regular stronger beacons scattered about ON and QC
were heard here in MI except for the following:

212  YGX  Gillam  MB
244  TH    Thompson  MB
248  WG   Winnipeg  MB
250  FO    Flin Flon  MB
269  UDE  Delta  MB

All with very good signals and all in the same direction and nothing heard in between.
So is it skip or a duct  ???

The only maverick was 254  5B  Summerside on PEI with the loudest signal ever in here from that beacon.

QG off the air this morning.
Allowed me to log 353  PG  Portage la Prairie  MB
for the first time.

FWIW, did some research on how this Manitoba town got its
intriguing sounding name.  Seems that the early explorers
Radisson and Groseilliers  (the French Canadian version
of our Lewis and Clark) had to portage (carry) their canoe
overland at this point hence the name.

Surprised you heard them in MD.  They have a weak signal.  The ground conductivity in that part of our state is poor.
They sometimes cannot be heard at my QTH which is good since it has allowed me to log NJ, FL, LA on the same channel.
