Nice start, stick with it as conditions improve as the Summer thunderstorm season winds down.  :)

Nice one.  Band was quiet, for a change, just before sunrise this morning.

A 50 vs 75 ohm mismatch won't cause the receiver to be deaf.

Longwave Loggings / Re: weak signal reception
« on: September 01, 2018, 2215 UTC »
Been noticing an interesting affect when tuning around on the NDB band.  If a strong local beacon is tuned in, it seems to pull up weaker signals on the same or adjacent channels.  Is there a name for this or is it just my imagination.  ???

cool thread
how far either side of the centre freq (approximately) does the effect work?

In my experience, to use the signal from a strong local beacon to exalt other weaker signals, the two signals must be very close together, either on the same frequency or maybe 1 or 2 kc apart.

Nice logs in spite of the horrible QRN all weekend.

edit:  There was a major Geomagnetic storm Sunday,  K-index 7-8.

Pretty much dominating the frequency in here this morning about an hour before sunrise, occasionally in and out with a foreign language format station.

Try them all, add a vertical to the mast as well as the other sloper or whatever it is you intend to add. I'd also have some antenna switching capabilities too.

Be sure to provide proper lightning protection and grounding.

260  YAT Attawapiskat ON and 260  UFX St. Felix deValois mixing in the heavy QRN this morning.
Also was able to pull 289  YLQ LaTuque QC and 300  Ogoki Post ON out of the DGPS band din.

Noisy conditions early this morning, lots of T-storm QRN as the WX map showed lots of storms mostly across the southern and eastern States.
Heard only a few beacons in Ontario, all fairly local.  So was quite surprised to hear 206  QI  Yarmouth  NS in here with a rather nice signal.
FWIW, a nearly 900 mile path, most of it would have been in twilight.

My concern there is that NDB transmitters actually have tiny monkeys inside, tapping on the morse code key. Each monkey sends at a different rate, and sometimes the monkey gets tired and sends a little more slowly, other times it sends more quickly, maybe after it had a coffee.

Hmmm,  banana powered NDB.
Maybe need to buy the monkey a keyer.

Anyway, it somewhat gives the beacon a personality.  Like the "fist" of a particular CW op.
