Equipment / 11 meter rig
« on: April 30, 2017, 2229 UTC »
OK, I have to admit I have a soft spot for 11m (CB).   Any recommendations for an 11m base rig?  I don't need a modifiable 10m with 400 watts inside, just really clean signal out of the box and SSB.  I.e., no splatterboxes.

If I accidentally forget to flip the antenna switch and it goes through my linear amp, well, mistakes happen.

The Galaxy DX-2547 looks interesting, though I see some complaints about quality control.  https://www.amazon.com/Galaxy-DX-2547-Station-Counter-Talkback/dp/B002LMIQQU

I'm not against a mobile that I run off a power supply, though.  Having a "base" radio is mainly for aesthetics.

Any recommendations?

I'm guessing it's Unknown Name Radio Network, but someone with reception will have to check it out.  Not readable from my QTH

Sounds exactly like the last time I heard numbers, and in my thread MDK2 said it was HM01

Strange, almost like a time signal.  19 dits then a dah.  Repeat.  Faster than 1/second though.

SINPO 25422 on my IC-R75

FWIW, Taiwan SSB meteorological broadcasting is theoretically scheduled now on this frequency.

*I should note this was off my RTL-SDR so hopefully the frequency is correct.  I have a multicoupler and AFERDI on order so I can use the RTL-SDR as a waterfall for the R-75 and the AFERDI directly.  :)

SINPO 45323

08:57 UTC now, and has been playing music since I tuned in.  I don't recognize any of the songs; they're in (I think) Spanish; some of them have a Latin dance beat.  Haven't heard an ID or anything except music so far.

Hmm, I'm not even sure it's a pirate, but I don't know of any scheduled broadcasts in this band at this time, and there's been no ID.  If I hear one, I'll update the post.

Edit:  09:34 UTC  faded out; still didn't get an ID

Equipment / What's a good upgrade from an R75?
« on: April 14, 2017, 0515 UTC »
Life got in the way, and I put my radios away for a while.  Last month I dug them out of mothballs and started up the hobby again.  I'm enjoying it and was thinking of investing in a new (or higher capability used) receiver.

Right now I'm using my 10+ year old Icom IC-R75 which works great, but was thinking of upgrading.  What's a good upper-mid range HF receiver?  Used is definitely an option because looking around I haven't seen many new radios :-(   I mostly listen to ham and SW, but I poke around the frequencies and will log utilities, decode RTTY, etc. Also, I've gotten spoiled with the DSP in the R75.  It would be difficult for me to bring myself to get a radio without it.  There are a lot of phone signals that would be unintelligible to me except for the DSP noise reduction.

I was looking at used JRC NDR-545s.  I'm also thinking of waiting for the new Icom receiver.  I'm open to SDRs, but don't know much about them.  I have a $20 USB SDR that I've been playing with, but I don't know much about the Airspy / SDRPlay and up level receivers.

Any suggestions?

KOHI  St. Helens, OR  SINPO: 32323   They were playing Old Time Radio (The Whistler).  Nighttime power is 12 watts, and I was receiving pretty clearly 130+ miles away.  It would have almost sounded local except they were getting stepped on by other stations during fade.

Someone is clogging up 3908 LSB in the ham bands with audio bite loops, profanity, music, etc.

Came across this at 0429 and it's still going on.  Pulling S9 here in the Seattle area
