HF Beacons / "D" 13527.7 kHz
« on: April 23, 2019, 2032 UTC »
Heard with slow "D", CW, on 13527.7 kHz, 2027 UTC on 23 April 2019.  Maybe RST 549.

RX: KiwiSDR in Midland, VA.  Antenna: 80M OCF dipole.

While I think that the situation may be exactly as described in the article, there isn’t enough information to tell whether C. Crane’s rights were violated.

The author writes as if someone in C. Crane explained their side of the story, but what we still don’t know is:
1. Exactly what contractural agreement did the two companies have regarding intellectual property?  Who retained ownership?  Paying for the development of something does not necessarily mean you own the design.
2. Did C. Crane pay for all of the R&D, or was it a shared expense?
3. Was the design new from the ground up, or was it based on a refinement of an earlier design?  Who owned that?
4. Maybe they had an agreement that the knockoff would not be sold in the US, and the problem here is Amazon?

I’ve often wondered why someone who was seemingly burned once (e.g. the Crane Skywave SSB vs the XHData D-808) would go back to the same place again.  You would think they would be wiser the second time around, but maybe there is more to the story.

Wow.  You are finding a lot of these.  I guess there a re lot more than two launches a day?

The NWS person I talked to was at a Skywarn class in Culpeper this week.  I don’t have his contact info but I do have the info for the program coordinator.  I will try to drop him a note.  The NWS people seem to be very willing to talk about their work.

I talked with a NWS employee this week and he confirmed the 1100 and 2300 UTC launch times from Sterling.  In an early posting it looked like your were receiving these on 401 MHz.  Some internet sources indicated that 403 MHz was used.  I did hear some weak data bursts on 403 MHz yesterday around 1545 UTC, but I don’t know what they came from - a radiosonde or perhaps some local device.

It would be helpful to know the time of day when these occur....something beyond just “evening”.

Equipment / Re: Loop on Ground - Can I bury the loop?
« on: February 26, 2019, 0945 UTC »
N6BV addressed this in QEX a while back.  Short answer is that even the normal “absorption” of the wire by your grass is going to significantly hurt reception.

VHF/UHF Logs, including satellites and radiosondes / Oscar 100
« on: February 14, 2019, 1005 UTC »
Qatar Oscar 100 is open for experimental usage and there is a lot of activity.  This is the first geostationary ham radio satellite transponder and is not visible in North America.  Uplink is on 2 Ghz and downlink is on 10 Ghz.

You can listen to the narrowband transponder at:

22 Meter Band HiFER Beacons / unknown 13556.79 kHz
« on: February 05, 2019, 2159 UTC »
Unknown 22M beacon, weak and slow fades, 2150Z 5 FEB19, 13556.79 kHz.  Intermittent dots and dashes, mostly I, T, A, D, E, N but no clear pattern.  Reminds me of the morse sent by the window shade and coke bottle in the old "On the Beach" movie...
