Equipment / Re: BCD436HP CB reception tells me I'm on a diff freq

Hahahaha! You guys are awesome. I luv this site! But guess what? It IS the GE CB! 🤣

Okay so I finally tested it again on my other radios and...LO AND BEHOLD...it's messed up! But I'm sure you'll take my word that I had tested it out A LOT and it DID work 1 year ago HAHAHA!!

Oh man I almost feel like apologizing to you guys. I could've figured it out hahaha. Thank you all so much I will test its companion but it's just time to get a new handheld CB! these were FREE.

And know what? They worked a LONG time. I talked to "many" ppl a year ago. So yea those were made well! Thanks again I think I'll get back into SW so you'll probly see me around.

Equipment / BCD436HP CB reception tells me I'm on a diff freq
« on: January 26, 2021, 1130 UTC »
Hey there folks! Been awhile; I got a question! [NOTE: I've been into radio about 7 yrs but don't kno much about the math and technical matters. II'm working on it but I'm learning pусский/Russian right now, etc]

You can see I have a pair of those orig, old GE handheld CBs. I don't talk much on there bcuz barely anyone is around to talk to here at my present QTH, without EXT antenna. My point is I have talked to local ppl before. But it's rare. Otherwise I wouldn't have to come here to ask this:

I GOT A BCD436HP (like a month before their newest model came out!) and that radio tells me I'm on a completely different channel than on my CB. My other radios pick it up and it's the same channel. And it's been awhile since I tried it on my Grundig so I'll check that again later 2day.

Like earlier I heard ppl on ch28, on the BCD436HP. Locals. I tried calling for reception report, no response, but that's FINE...except the BCD said i was on channel 12.

Okay I've kinda forgotten what those frequencies channels are so I'll refresh my memory later today; ANYHOW ALL THE OTHER RADIOS ARE CONSISTENT.

so!...I kno I have definitely come to the right place! Whaddya think? And I'll check back in like 8 hrs or so. But take ur time I've got all the time in the world. Cпаcибо, товарищи!   (<----thank you comrades) 🦆🦆🦆

Other / 7170 LSB rap music! 2315 19 July 2019
« on: July 19, 2019, 2331 UTC »
hey guys I haven't checked in for awhile anyway there's a lot of activity on 40M...I'm very sry idk the exact time I was not prepared for this but we'll say very close to 2315 UTC today 19 July 2019.
Someone was playing rap music! I thought it was a pirate music broadcast but after the song ended I have not heard anything more on or around that frequency BUT SO I thought I heard the end of a music broadcast; I logged on here to check it out and give you guys my reception report but I don't see 7170 KHz listed here! Did anyone else hear this?
It sounded just like the pirate music shows. Unfortunately I don't know the artist or anything about the song.

...anybody else hear that? It was weird

HF Mystery Signals / carrier 14318 KHz
« on: April 02, 2019, 1850 UTC »
Hey guys I hardly ever post in this section and I saw the post about "new radar stations" on HF...

Well 18:30z I just caught 14318 KHz carrier...(SSB sounds a continuous tone). Signal meter was reading close to +20...I can't figure out how to upload pics here. So I Googled it:

https://www.google.com/search?client=android-google&source=android-browser&ei=OqujXOv5J4WQtQXy5Jm4Cw&q=carriee+14318+KHz&oq=carriee+14318+KHz&gs_l=mobile-gws-wiz-serp.3..30i10.4075.4780..5517...0.0..0.569.1101.5-2......0....1.sCKlhp5ICEY

First 2 results; are they relevant? The second one said this was heard in Oct 2004.

Do ya know what this is? I hear FAINT voices but idk if it's another signal QRM.. (← interference?)

There is no LW broadcasting in the U.S.  Pretty much limited to Europe and Africa.

Okay! SO...what's with these Michigan NDBs? Oh...NDBs is not "broadcasting"?

Yeah I'd sure like to hear Radio Polska 225 KHz but I'm dreaming! So, LW is popular in Europe + Africa bcuz of its "ground propagation"? Since there are so many different countries and languages  right next to each other?

What about real "satellite" radios? ...is all that European LW broadcasting available via satellite radio?

Fall season conditions continue to improve with less QRN.

Yeah I should say so! I haven't listened in a few months...right now atm I hear NDBs all over the place! woot!

11:45z WEBEQUIE 355 KHZ 'YWP'

11:50z INTERNATIONAL FALLS, MN
353 KHz 'IN'

Also I'm copying good ol' DULUTH, MN...379 KHz 'DL'.

Btw I'm actually geographically closer to WINNIPEG than I am to DETROIT! like 15 miles closer

Oh cool I don't listen TOO much to the NDBs...but they help me learn Morse. And I didn't realize MI has so many...I guess with all the Canadian NDBs I just didn't think about it! Thanx for the log!

Incidentally, I'm hearing DULUTH beacon DL on 379 KHz right now...(obviously not Michigan!)

What is the 'AA' beacon I just heard on 364 KHz? 11:23z ...it seems to have stopped now. Am i just not copying it? Or is this like an American Airlines thing...?

Shortwave Broadcast / •CFRX• Toronto 1 KW power
« on: October 23, 2018, 2348 UTC »
Being in the middle of Lake Superior on a big hill such as I am; it's not infrequent that I copy •CFRX• from Toronto...1010 KHz on commercial AM dial.

But tonight it's absolutely clear and good copy. Yeah I don't even have EXT antenna so I'd  imagine any of you in the Great Lakes region may be able to copy :-) .

I like Canada. We all like Canada here in Michigan.

The call signs are more than likely different bases or aircraft using a rotating schedule of callsigns (I recall they used the names of different bands, heard PINK FLOYD, etc.) as callsigns - then FRESHMAN and LINEBACKER.  There are definite themes to the pool of callsigns that they rotate through.

The reference to Wing Attack Plan R (and Dr. Strangelove in general) is actually somewhat accurate.  The use of authentication is a major plot point in that film - and in Crimson Tide too! (remember the CRM-114 discriminator - ignored all radio traffic except traffic that had the correct three letter coded prefix - that happened to be O P E [precious bodily fluids, purity of essence etc.]?) - the use of authentication is extremely important with "in the clear" networks such as HF-GCS...it wouldn't be too difficult to create imitation traffic on that network but without the correct authentication codes it would be obvious to all concerned that that traffic was fake (spoofing attempt).

As mentioned, it is highly likely that a large amount of traffic heard on 4724 USB, 6712 USB, 6739 USB, 8992 USB, 11175 USB, 13200 USB and 15016 USB is likely "filler" traffic - since the EAMs use the One Time Pad method encryption the only possible way to glean information from listening to them is through traffic analysis...which can be mitigated by simply having huge amounts of "dummy" traffic mixed in with the actual messages.

Haha man I had a roommate for 5 yrs. ..he was my parents' age and he was a retired attorney. Man he LOVED Dr. Strangelove..."our precious bodily fluids, Mandrake!"

I didn't really get too into that film but no offense I'm not hostile to it!

But EAMs are "one-time pad" encryptions? You think they change their "pad" every day, or week, or what?

I just figured it was a different method of encryption. Anyhow...I've been back listening to em more again lately.

You think there's actual significance to  a 33-character msg or 36-character msg...cuz I'm counting usually like 30 characters (including callsign) and I've never heard them specify until recently, but NOT for the 30-character ones; so, it caught my attention. You think they're more/less significant? Or for different purpose? I defer to your judgement!

Yeah like I always say...the best way to manage this kinda s**t...is to constantly send dummy msgs. Yup. I also think if I was in charge we'd alternate the language of voiced numbers stations. Since you only gotta know how to count to 10.

Heck I'd use different languages for EAMs and coded word-msgs. Yup. Inundate the air with poppycock. Clearly a sound logical tactic :-)

But above all we must protect our bodily fluids!! ;-)
