Shortwave Broadcast / Re: CRI
« on: June 06, 2018, 1830 UTC »
I think this one is actually targeting Europe, as the relay from Cuba on 9580 is much closer to us. (But usually much more poorly modulated and therefore not as good a signal for North American listeners as 9570.)

Okay see I didn't even see this at first YES MDK2 I would definitely believe these broadcasts are intended for Western Europe! Bcuz that makes 100% sense to me!

What a weird freq! I hear all year round @ my location and it's always a little difficult but it IS consistently audible. With some effort.

Transmitting "Beijing Hour" in English on 9570 KHZ @ 01:15 UTC 1 June 2018 (20:15 CST local 31 May 2018)  targeting Eastern North America.  Items included
Business News
Korean Summit
Beijing weather:  36 C
CHina-Germany ties regarding "Protectionism"
Sinpo:4-4-4-4-5 on the Grundig 750
Sinpo: 3-2-2-3-3 on the 1940 Mantola Tube (not bad for a 78 year old radio)

TX Site:  Cerrick, Albania

Hey Don are u in WI? You say Cerrik is where the transmitter is, correct? Right.

Okay yeah CRI on 9570 KHz at the time you heard them, approx 1:00z? For the •Beijing Hour• program! Right! I do copy that quite often! But lately it's been excellent copy on 13740 KHz in the morning.

Cuz what I like is to catch the 13:00z "Chinese Theater" + especially "A Light On Literature"! I catch it every morning but it's sumtimes a struggle...in my apt I can barely hear, altho the SIGNAL meter says it's huge! But it's so damn quiet with fading! My thought was, maybe this is beaming to Canada but...perhaps Western Europe is the target?

Bcuz I catch it all year round and when I'm at my gf's house I can usually pull it in, tweaking the EQs...and frickin headphones!

But that's my fav programming CRI...they're my fav anyway, but especially "A Light On Literature"! Bcuz I was just gonna post about the biography of Chairman Mao Tse-Tung, that is their current featured work...and I just think it's funny bcuz they purposely give MAO a Scottish accent! Haha! I wonder why they decided to make him Scottish? Haha!

In the morn I like 13740 KHz. And 6020 KHz has been pretty strong for me in the evening, USUALLY. ..lately at this time of year BUT...I love the 9570 KHz •CRI• and that freq drives me nuts like I said bcuz it's so faint! But at my gf's house (away from my apt building where there is lots of interference) I can usually pull em in using $20 Panasonic audio headphones.

But yeah--Scottish MAO! Haha. Why? :-D

Mao was a bonny lad...maybe they're going for a •Braveheart• type of image haha!

Well you're right about the French word! My mistake.

I haven't checked out TOO much LW but I just saved all these frequencies to see if I can pull em in sumtime. I have heard several beacons and I'd like to learn Morse code so I figure I'll try to copy sum NBDs!  Also pretty close to Canada. Question:

●what does it mean to be "non-directional"? Don't the beacons come from a fixed location? What is their purpose?
● I'm hearing (24/7) a beacon on 335 KHz.  I think it's NOT coming from 328 or 341 bcuz it's clear when I set BANDWIDTH to NARROW...smack dab on 335 KHz, with ANTENNA pointed WEST from my location.

AND, that beacon 335 KHz...is it saying 'QT'? Cuz that's what I hear and I'm just learning basic Morse code

●Oh and my Grundig has a 3.5mm port for "LW/MW ANTENNA"...it attaches to the 360° rotatable ferrite antenna. What's the deal w that? Is there a good antenna I can attach for LW/MW?

hey sry I didn't respond to ur msg until now. I've been enjoying perusing other areas of this awesome website

I've been catching them on 7245 KHz, early morning like 3:00am EDT. I'm in the middle of the Lake  ;)

Agree w/ everything you said MDK2, also have to add, these two announcers have AFAIK been the same for many years (decades?)... it's amazing they have anyone speaking English at all, so we have to give these two announcers credit for at least the "college try". Can't imagine there are a ton of anglos around to practice with. Also, you are correct the YL is far easier to copy than the OM.

Yes. I found some old DPRK-produced documentary on youtube, going back to the days of Kim Il Sung (probably the 80s judging by the "Great Leader's" physical appearance, plus the presence of Kim Jong Il by his side - he had been designated the heir apparent around 1980 and started showing up at all the photo ops with dad at that time). And who was doing the English narration but Mr. VOK himself, sounding quite a bit younger but with the same telltale inflection and pronunciation.

Wow ↑ that's interesting. We're probably all "good at" recognizing voices; I know I am. So i'll definitely take ur word on that. I just heard a HAM on 40M that I recognize as one of the biggest skip-shooters that I hear on CB

yessir I heard that kind of faintly just about 23:15z and it was trippin me out so thnx for clearing that up for me

•23:25 copy loud and clear. Weird techno music and bigoted banter. Hmm. I guess that's...cool... :o

•23:40z getting clearer; clear as a bell for sure in the Keweenaw. Dude giving a track list and into another song. I find this music bizarre

•23:43...sounds like jungle music commencing hahaha I dig it

•23:48z "smoke a cigarette and pour yourself a shot of vodka"... :D no thnx I'll have a dip of tobacco tho cuz I'm a hick from the woods  ;)

•23:54 Bob Beck electrical micro-currents thru your bloodstream..."blood electrification machine"...man that's a bunch of foolishness! "Rips apart a bunch of bacteria"?...what?  Why's so much bacteria in your bloodstream? More techno music commences. Sounds like •AC/DC• meets •The Prodigy• meets •The B52s• meets •Billy Idol•

•0:02 ....eerie menacing sounds. That's cool. Oh now it turned into another weird ass •Bush• meets •NIN• song... :o

I wonder why they pronounce Korea as "Career" lol

Yea their English is a little stilted...too bad I'm not qualified to judge their French pronunciation but I wonder if they can speak French better than they speak English. Hmm

A likely product of their isolation for so many decades. Few North Koreans may travel at all, and there are few English speaking countries that they're likely to go, so the ones that know English probably learned it in Korea, without the benefit of being around native speakers...I have to have a clear signal in order to understand him, otherwise the combo of noise and his strange way of speaking confounds me.

Haha! What confounds me is the supreme glorious glory of their style!

"The ppl of North Korea have complete confidence in the •Workers Party of Korea• and their Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-un!"

↑ha...they do? Oh! Okay, Winston Smith!
(SWL is a bourgeois affectation anyway...a running-dog tool of the capitalist oppressor)

yea I figured the measurements were not absolute, I know the meter is probly off a bit...the Grundig is cool but I obviously noticed it's not 100% accurate best receiver in the universe!

So yes my question was in general just how to read the meter. I kno that the calibrations and such...I know the radio itself could be off but I didn't have a clue how to read that meter.

First of all I need to be able to read the meter...then I can worry about its accuracy + calibration. :-) ...but all the info is gr8

Thnx to you all!

I barely caught the tail end of sumthin at 0:51 11182 KHz USB...was that it?

No, it was not.  Tonight, as anticipated, this station started a new schedule, at 0700, 0720, and 0740 UTC.

While the shift in time was predicted, the frequencies used were unknowable.  It turns out the freqs were 13563 kHz, USB mode, at 0700 UTC, 12163 kHz, USB mode, at 0720 UTC, and 10263 kHz, USB mode, at 0740 UTC.

T!

(PS) the sharp eyed might note I posted this at 0716 UTC, before the second and third transmission happened ;)  Such confidence I have....

Good! I figured I'd let you guys find em and tell me where they are. I understand we expected the freq change. But I noticed SOME pre-2017 frequencies noted on that chart...I figured I'd monitor them around 1:00z. Yea somebody was talking SSB around 11180.

I've been looking at the chart. Thnx for documenting the freq change. I'll listen next weekend :-)

In the same way that it's still actually illegal to pass on to anybody what you may hear on a radio transmission (believe it or not!).

...anything you hear? Obviously there are specifications regarding that, I assume? Like...just for HAMs HF QSO? Like what about  VHF...2-meter band? the 1st responders?

So when I hear disgusting and outrageously vulgar chatter on 80M, I can't talk about it? I

Sum of those guys...man they should be ashamed! You kno what I mean? Arguing like children and seriously I'm not easy to offend I am pretty vulgar myself you know but some of these HAMs on 80M...40M...honestly they should be ashamed! That really surprised me. I thought licensed HAMs would be more...professional, I guess? ...I still can't believe sum of this stuff I hear

I never knew there was any assumption of privacy...if you're talking on-the-air, across the world. I assumed that privacy was automatically forfeited.

I wanna hear some pescadores tho!! Bueno!
