Utility / Re: what are the 'WLO' beacons?
« on: June 02, 2018, 0005 UTC »
Wow, thnx Looking-Glass! Yea I've heard the single letter CW beacons here and there...helps me learn Morse code.

About 10 min ago I just stumbled upon  a 'WLO' msg 13111 USB

"ShipComm! "This is WLO...ShipCom...we are listening for radiotelephone calls at such-and-such a time...this is WLO...ShipCom...we are listening for radiotelephone calls now on channels blah...blah...blah...blah...blah. This is WLO."

:-) finally caught the buggers

Hey guys I'm new I really like this website; I've been into radio for only bout 5 yrs and only SWL for 2 yrs.

I hear signal reports a lot. I own all sorts of radio equipment in storage...like an SWR meter (missing one gigantic coax). I'll set up SWR later probly for CB.

Anyway plz tell me how to read the •Grundig Satellit 750• signal meter?

You already know this but the top meter goes from 1--9 in black, then continues in green with +10...+20...to 60dB.

Bottom meter is read and goes from 0--5.

If, for example I receive a signal that hits '9' on top meter...is that "S9"? I see you guys reporting signal strength like that.

And does that meter show a SWR?

I hear: "you're 5/9 in Nova Scotia. You're 5/9 in Glasgow." Does this Grundig Signal Meter show me that ratio also? Or only signal strength?

Thnx again you guys are absolutely gr8

I could actually hear most of the news today! They were blabbing about the Olympics or...the Paralympics. So-and-so won the 5k meter run...blahblah...talking about Tehran.

I'll try 9435 @ 15:00z

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: CFRX Toronto 6070 loud & clear
« on: May 29, 2018, 2205 UTC »
I had them about the same time you did 2015-2030 as I was spinning the dial.  I was surprised to receive them so early the afternoon -

You kno what? I posted that around 20:00z BUT I neglected to mention... I actually had HEARD them early in the morning around 10:00z. Previously I had heard them around 13:00z

But right now they're coming strong on 6070. The same time YOU heard them. I'm new here and forgot to mention--when I started this topic I had heard CFRX about 5:00am--6:00am EDT...but NOW...22:04z...they're pretty strong. Getting a bit weaker as I type this

Yup I have a gr8 copy right now on some Greek music. I hear this station quite a bit tho I've never listened for very long. But it's clear in the Copper Country and yes the music is very cool  8)

Voice of Korea 9435 kHz AM is on again in English from 1500z

Okay awesome thnx for ur help!

•13:04z Wow! Imagine that. DPRK English clear as a cotton-pickin bell! So far. Introduced a song either written by or for Kim Il-Sung ...they have some pretty bad accents when speaking English.

•13:10 now the news is breaking up...fading away..

11710 French broadcast; I can hear every word! Lol why? It seems like I always copy the French program very well...as opposed to English. I mean this is absolutely clear as a bell.

So hopefully the next English broadcast will be good copy here...I'll monitor 11710 as usual

(For three years running I've noticed that they come in best in May and early June.)

Haha yeah I could tell I was getting better copy w the changing seasons...I've only been SWL for cpl yrs.

But right now by coincidence I came upon DPRK on 11735 and I can hear their...totally awesome music...really well. There's a STRONG echo when they talk tho and I cannot decipher it altho it's English. Reminds me of the Cuban Lady echoing sometimes + the EAM echoes. 10:53z

•10:55z you kno what I just realized? I'm hearing a second station as well, concurrent...most likely •Radio Transmundial• 50 KW from Brazil...cuz I've heard them many times. Sounds very...interesting

13:12z 11710 KHz

English language program even better copy than yesterday. Talkin bout the meeting at the DMZ...

"the two leaders shook hands with a firm grip!"  ;D

•14:00z 9435 KHz is not sounding good at my location. Perhaps it will be better if i catch it at a diff time

↑ same story with 13760 now at my location. No copy to speak of.

Meanwhile in Russia... a swl who wanted to get qsl cards and scheds from the west met up with someone in a warsaw pact country at the border to collect them from him and was arrested by the kgb and imprisoned. Years in prison for being a swl. Nice the state dept only made one request the material rather than raiding their homes.

Yeah...it is nice. It wasn't ONLY a QSL request. He unfortunately also asked for maps from Moscow. That was the issue; the maps... :o

I made mention of this before, but for some reason VOK comes in best to North America in May. This is across all frequencies. You're more likely to hear beams intended for Europe and Asia this time of year than any other, not just

Yep u did mention that and I could tell it was getting better with the seasons changing anyway. But thanx a lot I really appreciate you telling me that stuff bcuz I want to learn! hopefully I'll hear sum even better copy in the next month :-)

I think his haircut is what people admire most.

Sexiest Man of the Year on •The Onion•. Remember China picked up the story and presented it as true :-Di
