10/11 meters / Christmas SSTV 27700 USB 1550 UTC 29 DEC 2022
« on: January 01, 2023, 2211 UTC »
11m SSTV has been very active the past few days with band openings from my QTH in the Southeastern US to Europe and Mexico.

Thanks to radiogaga for pointing out the Azteca DXers group from Mexico sending Christmas-themed SSTV.

Here are my best decodes from 29 Dec 2022.  Apparently, they will continue until 06 JAN 2023, so you still have time to catch them on 27.700 MHz.

Thanks, Gaga!  I'm not on Facebook very often, so I missed that.  One of the commenters seemed to think it was Barrett Selcall which does sound similar, except it uses the more common 170 Hz frequency shift, and transmissions last about twice as long as these bursts.

I assume it's some sort of organized system of transmitters.  Transmissions were all the same duration, and when there was more than one signal at once, they began roughly at the same time similar to FT8 or JS8Call, but with longer pauses between frames.

This may be futile given how many types of low-powered wireless devices use 27 MHz, but hopefully this being outside the ISM portion of 11m might narrow it down.

This morning, I'm hearing several FSK signals centered around 27.552 MHz.  They're either short bursts, or more likely, fading in and out.  I noticed them here locally in the Southeastern US, and the same or similar signals were on a couple Northeastern SDRs I checked, too.  It looks like about 250 KHz, which isn't a spacing I'm familiar with.  Sometimes I just hear one signal at a time, and sometimes there are two or three at slightly different frequencies.

Here's a recording and screencap from one of Sigma's Kiwis.

Jumped on an online SDR in the northeast.  Sounds great coming in at S9 +10dB.  Listening to both USB and residual LSB in I/Q mode for a pseudo-stereo effect that goes nicely with the psychedelic music.

1755 NCS327 and NCS042 discuss which frequency would be best for the net later tonight. "We'll probably need to use the other frequency."
1759 NCS327 makes a final call for check-ins.
1800 NCS327 instructs all stations on the net to close down.
1800 NCS042 relays instruction to close down.
1800 FreeState40 relays instruction to close down.
1802 FreeState40 asks NCS327 which frequency identifier for the net later tonight. NCS327 anticipates starting the net on frequency "SAF0" and moving to "SAG0" if necessary.

S6 on N1NTE KiwiSDR.

1548 Sweeping sound, but I wouldn't call it a tone sweep.  Sounds kinda like an air-raid siren.
1551 Also a pulsing sound along with the sweeps.  Sounds like OTH radar, but I think it's part of the transmitted signal.

S7 into the southeastern US tonight with some deep fades.  I don't know what your audio filter settings are, but I don't think I'm receiving anything above 3 KHz.  SIO 333.

Utility / Re: ALE and MIL-STD 188-110 8025 USB 1915 UTC 01 DEC 2022
« on: December 02, 2022, 1809 UTC »
Yeah, I was sending the audio to external programs so I could try to decode them both at once.  The ALE log is from Multi-PSK, and I truncated it down to just the calls.  I suppose I should include the SINAD, BER, and LQA info as well next time.

I was able demodulate the 110 as well, but as you said, the actual traffic was encrypted.  The short preamble on most of the transmissions makes me suspect a system that establishes a session between to stations with 75/long, and then switches to a higher bitrate with short preambles for the duration of the session.  The long periods of 2400/short with little bursts of 600/short made me think about sending blocks of data with the receiving station sending ACKs/NAKs.

42
Roger. I don't see a way for me to do that myself, at least from the mobile site.

If this is just a pirate imitating a numbers station, could one of the moderators move it to the short wave Pirates section?

Received via W3HFU KiwiSDR at S7 to S9.  Appears to be National Guard net with ALE calls as well as MIL-STD 188-110A ARQ sessions.  Could this be an HF mail system?

Interestingly, the 110A traffic didn't seem to stop during the ALE calls, so I'm not absolutely sure that the calling station wasn't transmitting on top of someone.

Started at  1500 UTC with about a minute of flute music followed by what sounded like a computer-generated female voice with an English accent saying "this is, this is... 10211, 10211" followed by more 5-digit groups with each group spoken twice.

I was to slow to catch the music on my recording, so it starts with the beginning of the voice transmission.

This is the same frequency and mode used by the recent Hawaiian Numbers shortwave pirate transmissions, but I'm logging it here unless anyone suggests otherwise.
