Utility / Hurricane Watch Net activity on 14325 USB
« on: August 26, 2020, 1939 UTC »
Just heard a couple operators relaying the latest forecast information and asking for other check-ins at 1933 UTC on the Hurricane Watch Net frequency.

As a reminder, the other HWN frequency, often used at night, is 7268 LSB.

I stumbled on this broadcast via Sofia, Bulgaria, near the end of the 15 minutes it is on between 0315 and 0330 UTC.

I could hear a weak but definite signal with some low Arabic talking and a little Middle Eastern-style music until signoff at 0330 UTC. This is aimed at the Middle East and Northeast Africa; power listed on short-wave.info as 50 kilowatts.

Shortwave Broadcast / Sri Lanka BC 11905 AM 0041 UTC 20 Aug 2020
« on: August 20, 2020, 0350 UTC »
Tuned in and heard just the carrier at first, but the audio faded up by 0041 UTC, first with a female singing a South Asian-style song, then talk by a woman in presumed Bengali, then another song as the audio strengthened by the minute. More talking by the woman host at 0047 UTC, sounded like an ID in there. Then more music, with almost no more talking, all the way to sudden signoff at 0058 UTC.

SINPO 25222 overall, though the signal popped up to 3 in the final minutes before signoff.

Utility / Taupo Marine Radio ZLM 6224 kHz USB 0536 UTC 19 Aug. 2020
« on: August 19, 2020, 0538 UTC »
I haven't heard this one in a while. Caught it rising above the noise with the usual accented male voice with marine weather conditions and forecast information. Poor to fair signal; some SSB distortion as the signal faded in and out. By 0550 UTC, it had strengthened above the noise to be more copyable.

I tuned into this one at 0455 UTC tonight and found a weak signal that faded in and out of the noise with both male and female voices in Cantonese, though the audio was mostly fading out by 0510 UTC. Some SSB distortion and storm crashes added to the noise.

Listening via NA5B near D.C. ...

0110 UTC: "Star-Spangled Banner" sung by a choir.
0111 UTC: Male speaking in both English and Spanish, then female and male together. Sounds maybe like a political talk?

This early afternoon (local time here) broadcast from Voice of Nigeria often doesn't come in, or only minimally, during the summer months here near Seattle. But I tuned in today to find audible programming in presumed Hausa instead of just a hint of a carrier.

The audio rose until it was audible constantly until the signal signed off around 2058 UTC a moment ago.

Shortwave Broadcast / Radio Vanuatu 11835 AM 0603 UTC 16 Aug 2020
« on: August 16, 2020, 0634 UTC »
I needed a break from my kids (I'm watching them by myself for 10 days, and young teen/tweens are maddening at times!), so I came downstairs to my radio and flipped on 11835 kHz to check for Vanuatu's harmonic.

Conditions have been noisy at night lately, so I've not heard Vanuatu either at all or beyond a hint for a while, but it was holding audible above the noise tonight with talking in Bislama and musical interludes in between. I compared it to audio from a New Zealand SDR to make sure I was hearing Vanuatu instead of CNR2, which was audible in the background.

By 0630ish UTC, the audio was starting to fade back into the noise.

Shortwave Broadcast / Mighty KBC 9925 AM 0025 UTC 16 Aug 2020
« on: August 16, 2020, 0032 UTC »
Finally remembered  to tune in KBC on this local Saturday evening. Fair signal with lots of noise and choppy fading, but the audio was mostly understandable on this signal from Germany.

Listening via SDR in Fair Hill, MD ... fair signal through the noise.

2312 UTC "Finally Moving" by Pretty Lights.
2315 UTC "Ice Age" by Dr. John.
2319 UTC: Spoken bit ... sounded like a possible ID in there? Couldn't tell through the noise.
2320 UTC: Music again, but the signal's losing the battle against the noise.
2326 UTC: Sycko Radio ID.

Shortwave Broadcast / VOA via Botswana 4930 AM 0402 UTC 9 Aug 2020
« on: August 09, 2020, 0404 UTC »
Lots of noise, but I could hear some actual audio from the VOA program in English on this frequency. I often can get this broadcast during wintertime, but it's more rare to hear it this time of year.

Less rare, but giving out a much better signal was VOA via the same Botswana site on 5925 kHz at the same time.

Heard via NA5B near D.C. ...

2317 UTC: "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor. Good, solid signal.
2318 UTC: "Highway to the Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins.
2321 UTC: "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Swede.
2324 UTC: "Brown-Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison.
2327 UTC: Silence for a moment or two, then "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson at a lower volume than the previously played songs. No ID yet.
2331 UTC: "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood. Audio level on the songs seems to be up again. Song was suddenly cut off at 2332 for a moment before resuming.
2334 UTC: "Home" by Daughtry. No ID yet.
2337 UTC: Suddenly getting buried by noise.
2338 UTC: I heard the start of a new song, but it's lost in the noise now via the NA5B SDR. Might also have gone off at about that time.

Shortwave Broadcast / Radio Tamazuj 11650 AM 0335 UTC 7 Aug 2020
« on: August 07, 2020, 0345 UTC »
Found a nice signal from this one via Madagascar (and aimed at South Sudan) this evening in presumed Juba Arabic, with a woman talking at length, followed by music at 0342 into a male voice with an ID and more talking, including a phone interview. At 0356 UTC, Arabic music to news at 0400 UTC. Fair signal overall, but lots of noise and choppy distance fading; SINPO 34223.

Just checked 7470 kHz and found Josiah back after several days -- if not longer -- of being off the air. A noisy signal with lots of fading, but very audible talking as of 0220 UTC here near Seattle, where we've still got full daylight.

Just in time to hear the sign-on of Radio Taiwan in Japanese with a female announcer. Nice signal without any jamming (probably because China doesn't care about broadcasts in Japanese), though some fading kicked in after the first few moments. SINPO 45444.
