Finally heard this one at 1550 UTC this morning with just my Eton's whip antenna on the deck of our flooded-out house, where there's not as much local interference noise as there is in our temporary rental place. Heard a female voice in Chinese on 8117 USB.

I get his weekly report via podcast, and it is indeed up-to-date in that format. The newest one should hit my iPod tonight.

via the Penn State SDR ...

2045 UTC: AC/DC song
2047 UTC: Heard Crusher insult Mr. Red Sky, then start a new AC/DC song
2048 UTC: Crusher back: "All right, you Turkey Necks ..." and added that due to bad propagation, he's not staying on long.
2050 UTC: Giving HFU shoutouts right now, then ID into song "Funkify Your Life." Huge fade for a moment or two.
2057 UTC: Crusher saying "I'm outta here" and "bye bye," then silence for a moment into music on USB.

Weak but readable via the SDR.

Weak but clearly audible on my receiver and the local SDR out here ...

0158 UTC: "Flowers (Nothing But)" by Talking Heads
0200 UTC: "What's so Funny 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding?" by Elvis Costello
0204 UTC: "The Politics of Dancing" by Re-Flex (LOVE this song from my teen years!)
0208 UTC: "Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners
0212 UTC: ID that I missed, then "No New Tale to Tell" by Love and Rockets
0215 UTC: Canned ID: "This is ... Mix Radio." Then "Cruel to be Kind" by Nick Lowe
0218 UTC: Another ID, then "Cosmic Thing" by The B-52's. The signal's now starting to slip closer to the noise floor on the local SDR in Machias, Washington, though I can still identify the music between the slow fades.
0223 UTC: "If You Leave" by OMD

Great tunes, and Mix's usual high-quality audio really came through on the signal peaks!

MW Loggings / XERF 1570 AM 0232 UTC 22 October 2019

Heard XERF in Ciudad Acuña, Mexico, with what sounded like a woman hosting a talk show with a caller, some ads or promos and then ballad music, all of which matched the station’s livestream. The signal was very clear, but it was barely there at times, fading up to no better than poor most of time and affected by that choppy distance fading noise. By 0243 UTC, however, it was peaking at fair.

This one, of course, is throwing out 100,000 watts (I think that's still true, right?). The distance from here to there is more than 1,700 miles.

Clandestine Stations / Re: SoH? 11120 AM

Yep, I heard CNR or whatever Chinese service they are using to try jamming SoH on 11170 kHz twice in recent days.

877
The signal was audible out here -- though no better than fair at the peaks -- during the 1900 UTC hour in Fulfulde and right now, at 2019 UTC, in Hausa. Nigeria's often a hard signal to catch on the West Coast, so hearing it even sort of decently during the daytime here is nice.

Thanks for the heads-up that Bangkok was audible here near Seattle during the 1500 UTC hour. Somehow, I'd not tuned into this station since I resumed shortwave listening a year and a half ago.

I tuned in this morning at 1547 UTC, and both frequencies were audible, though 8743 was the better of the two by a little at the time and much better than the lower frequency by 1635 UTC. And you're right: Those musical tones cut through the noise floor way better than the rather monotone male and female voices.

Is this one really 1,000 watts? That's the only power I find listed.

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: Chinese programming on 11170 kHz
« on: October 21, 2019, 0600 UTC »
Thanks for relocating this to the correct queue and for the answer! Only stumbled upon this because I caught a few EAM transmissions on neighboring 11175 kHz USB earlier this weekend.

Shortwave Broadcast / Chinese programming on 11170 kHz
« on: October 21, 2019, 0118 UTC »
Chinese broadcast-style programming at 0050 UTC on Oct. 21 on 11170 kHz. Audible in both AM and USB mode. Off by around 0100 UTC.

This is the second time I've encountered a Chinese broadcast on this frequency in the past week. Anybody with an idea what this might be? Could it be CNR being used as a jammer for Sound of Hope?

Good via Washington, D.C. ...
2149 UTC: Frank Zappa song, live version where he's introducing his band
2152 UTC: "A Halloween Treat ..." (live at the NYC Palladium in 1977 version) by Frank Zappa
2158 UTC: Start of "Lather" by Frank Zappa from the same album, then sudden cutoff at 2159 UTC.

2054 UTC: Rock music heard via Burke, Virginia. Distorted right at 6930, with a fair level of noise floor around it.

XEPE in Tijuana, Mexico, with a female-hosted news-talk show in Spanish, a simulcast of La Tremenda AM on XESDD. The signal was weak but clear, with fade outs at times, especially after 0640 UTC. Listed as 10 kilowatts at night.

Playing ESPN radio sports talk, which I checked against the station’s online stream. The signal was fair overall to good at the peaks, with choppy distance fading on the fade outs. KSTP is one of the last true clear-channel stations that I can hear from well over 1,000 miles away in St. Paul, Minn.

I'm much closer to KCMX, but that signal does indeed carry well from Southern Oregon. It regularly overpowers local KIXI on 880 here near Seattle.
