Absolutely. My first "serious" general coverage receiver was a Hammarlund HQ-180. I think it would still hold its own today for SWL.

Apparently it is still alive and not just on some sports station. WDGY via Kiwi using SoDiRa. My kind of format and cool to hear in stereo. Too bad it's daytimer. At 8:03am it is still struggling with skywave. Intermittent Stereo lock though.

The Spark product has evolved nicely. Trial version is here https://drm-sender.de/  Played with it back in 2006 for grins using a Ramsey FM transmitter, Spark audio output to the Ramsey analog in, decoded with FM portable and laptop running DReaM. Realize that's not really 'how it works' for DRM on FM, but it did work. Same with using DReaM aas transmitter. Might be fun to try the Spark AM+AMSS functionality on HF.

Part 15 AM and FM Station Operation / Re: Part 15 AM and FM

Processing is of paramount importance if the goal is to be equivalent to even classical music public or college stations in dial presence. While FM broadcast is fully capable of transmitting clean 30-15kHz "non-processed" stereo audio even when most listeners won't be listening on equipment capable of reproducing this range, Part 15 stations will be hard pressed to deliver a strong, quiet signal. High SNR makes it possible to transmit unprocessed audio with effectiveness. Hard to achieve over any considerable distance with a Part 15 transmitter. Great for around the yard. Problem is, if I'm listening on the Eton Mini, I have to turn it all the way up to hear all the music. With processing, it becomes a nice background mask to crickets, cars and airplanes.

Equipment / Re: The Best Active Loop Antenna 2019 = MLA-30?

Magloops can also be mounted horizontally, which points the null straight up and straight down, making it generally omnidirectional. In practice, a horizontal magloop should be mounted as is practical.

Here's the test data for top end radio receivers.  http://www.sherweng.com/table.html

NRD-545 rates right up there with a Kenwood TS-430.

As for the MLA-30, at least on MW, it doesn't outperform a Belar shielded loop sitting side by side in the same room. I wouldn't expect any active magloop to outperform an active shielded loop indoors.

And failure... The only retailer (pelam.de) I can find showing them in stock is in Germany, and it states specifically they do NOT ship to the United States. Bummer.

Shortwave Broadcast / Radio Marti DRM on 7345kHz
« on: July 06, 2020, 2137 UTC »
Anyone catching it directly? I can get it on a couple of Kiwis near-ish Greenville, but can't get a good enough SNR here today to decode. Yesterday 'something' was jamming it. Had great SNR but no lock due to the jamming.

2150 = the interference just started. Three narrow carriers right down the middle of the DRM signal.

We tried Beyond Meat burgers at home. Made chaffles for buns. it was gross. The Beyond Meat, that is. Chaffles the only thing that made it palatable. No amount of Lee & Perrins or ketchup could possibly fix this poison.

Equipment / Re: What are you using for SWLing?

Just added a couple of pocket portables to the arsenal. The Eton Mini and the Eton Elite Traveler. Both OK for very casual HF. MW is surprisingly good on the Mini, as it doesn't seem to suffer from frontend overload from a nearby station as much as the VR-120 or VX-7r. It is by no means deaf. I'm able to just pull in a 5kw station some 70m away at midday.

The Traveler is big for a pocket radio. It was impulse, as I saw it discounted and noticed it had LW and RDS. Played with it last night in the backyard and had pretty good luck catching the major broadcasters. MW also very good at night. Both radios do surprisingly well on HF considering the antennas are very short compared to what I'm used to on my portables of yore (DX-440, Royal 3000). Traveler picks up NDBs on the built in ferrite, also surprisingly well.

1325  S9 here in S TX this morning

Odd sound and signal looks like USB. Thought it might be some artifacts fro a nearby MW but couldn't find any that matched the pattern. Initially, there was a carrier along with it but it went away at 1300

1330 UTC also picking it up on both of the Brownsville Kiwis. There is a station on 9230, the noise is on the upper side of that freq, probably about 8kc wide.
